I have some leads for an OpenAI intro and wondering about the RTO policy there. (a) I live in Cupertino and commuting 3 days a week to SF would eat about 8+ hours per week of work time. Are they flexible about doing 1 or 2 days a week? (b) I'm in a relatively new long distance relationship and visit my partner for about 10 days every 2 months and work from there (US - east coast). She visits me on the alternate months. We'll figure out how to close the gap eventually if things go well for the next year or two-ish. Are they tolerant towards occasional remote work requests like that?
Honestly, I don’t think it’s worth spending too much energy thinking about this until you have an offer (or at least an interview) there. My guess is that they’re super strict on RTO (hell, there are people who regularly work 6-day weeks there according to their tweets), and I assume a recruiter would tell you something similar about RTO. That said, an actual OpenAI employee or recruiter would be the best person to ask. Given you have some leads, pursue those and ask before getting too deep into a hypothetical situation
Altman is one of the tech bros pushing for full time office. Even if they say they are fine now i wouldn’t trust them to not change it And it’s not like they’ll have a hard time hiring people willing to work in the office 24/7
Yeah it's a bit of a pity, I do want to be in cutting edge machine learning research and willing to work hard, but hard RTO policies are not for me.
They told me that there is no flexibility about working in person in the office three days a week. I bet individual hiring managers have much more flexibility
No flexibility.

How’s capitalism going?
How did you meet her ?
I used to live on the east coast and we knew each other as friends for many years. I moved to the west coast for work some years ago. A few months ago we met up but ended up confessing that if it weren't for the distance we actually do like each other and then we agreed that if distance was the only thing stopping us we should try. So far it's been going really well. My current company (Amazon) has offices in her city so I'm able to visit her and work out of there without getting flagged for RTO, but the environment is pretty toxic and I'm hunting for new opportunities that either (a) also have offices there OR (b) tolerate remote work for 1-2 out of 8 weeks.
That’s great luck. A life partner is a much more important decision than a job too, keep that in mind
