OpenAI employees did you sign the petition out of fear?

With the majority signing, I wonder what % was out of fear.

OpenAI Tech Staff Nov 20, 2023

Yes. Lots of peer pressure, didn’t have much of a choice. The early employees have the most $$$$ to lose and snort the company koolaid so they’re the most aggressive. They were calling people in the middle of the night.

Amazon night010 OP Nov 20, 2023

That is dumb.

Microsoft WhatsBap Nov 20, 2023

Would you not have signed otherwise?

Amazon night010 OP Nov 20, 2023

If msft hires openai employees, openai should hire the laid off msft AI ethics team :)

Microsoft krnq5v Nov 20, 2023

Why?

Amazon night010 OP Nov 20, 2023

No one knows, but it *seems* that those with Altman are for rapid development, commercializing and profit. The other side might be prioritizing safety and managing risks.

Can an OpenAI employee opine on the views expressed by this acct: https://twitter.com/jdjdnwhsudodsk

OpenAI vfvy65 Nov 21, 2023

A pre-ChatGPT engineer reached out to me to notify me that it existed and asked if I wanted my name to be included. That’s it. There was no pressure whatsoever nor did I feel pressured to either. I heard they called people in the middle of the night but I just got a text 🤷‍♂️

I will say that the abuse allegations from his sister are frightening.

So now that Sam A is back, things I saw over social media and news that baffled me: 1. MS basically had money and headcount to absorb 500 employees and pay them 600K - 900K. Good year to not get a merit increase 2. OpenAI celebrated shipping of a product when ChatGPT was practically down for many customers. Funny enough, the shipping tweets also sounded like everyone was coordinating on a group chat before posting the tweets, much like their heart retweet. 3. Lots of hatred from OpenAI on using Microsoft products and judgement on talent, even though MS is a big collaborator/investor in their for-profit division. 4. We still don’t know what happened in the first place to oust Sam, and the hypothesis about Anthropic comparison by Toner or even the quote “not being candid” doesn’t make sense. And D’Angelo is still on the board, the Friday coup had nothing to do with Quora/Poe then. What is it that led to this? 5. Salesforce/Amazon/Google went extra mile by having their top execs reach out to OAI talent for poaching, and was ready to match their current comp. Would you put so much effort to hire the same folks if this disruption hadn’t taken place/a year from now, and stilll match the comp? 6. Is there enough change in the board operations, that will prevent this from happening again?

Meta Kuph85 Nov 22, 2023

I think the idea is to pack the board with people who will rubber stamp any of Sam’s decisions. There’s still the nonprofit mission though. It remains to be seen if any of the board members will be willing to take on personal liability from blatantly not adhering to the charter.

When you have $2-8 mil on the line, you will follow the money. It’s not about Sam, it’s about their payout.
