What happens when most of your team is Indian?
I am an Indian citizen and a perpetual GC beggar. At least I used to be. My biggest fear to date was what if I lose my job in the US and have to move back forever. I have been in the US since 19 years and still have no sight of clarity on getting my EB2 date becoming current. I have worked at Amazon and Google before joining Microsoft. I am an L65 PM. Interestingly, after a gap of many years I visited India and traveled internally. I stayed there for 6+ weeks including the Christmas holidays. I spent a good amount of time in the cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune. I interacted with several tech as well as non tech people. This included India based employees of the US Big Tech companies. I noticed the change in the daily lives of people there. I was pleasantly surprised that the impression I had cultivated about India was challenged. That place and people have grown a lot and IMO I see them to be growing a lot faster than even what we have been up to here in the US. In many aspects, I found some of the services there more advanced than those in the US. The pays seemed to be good and the quality of lives of people has bumped up. Of course there are classical problems (pollution, population, economic disparity, communalism) that India has always had but net-net I think there is a tremendous amount of positive growth that people are going to see there. In fact I think the homeless camps in San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles are no different than those back there. Last but not the least, I see a plethora of International and US Venture Capitalists funding startups based out of India. That country is becoming a magnet for capital and investments. In conclusion, this trip helped me combat my fear of Layoffs. To the extent, I would even say it doesn't matter if I have to move back or I might move back out of my own will. I feel confident to find something comparable or even better than what I get here. Just my opinion. But don't look at US jobs as the American dream jobs any more. I don't see Google or Meta or any of the Big Tech jobs or its loss as a career win or loss. This country and its growth are saturating so don't lose your heart if you get impacted. It is not fun but certainly there are alternatives.
Good!! Why is it in tech ?
Do you think you'll get a job in India
I certainly feel that the opportunities are many or more.
I’ve been unemployed for the past 3 months….literally no one’s hiring entry level here anymore :(
Indias only gonna go up from here! As much as people are ignorant about china, none of the American cities can compete with shenzen, guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, etc. India has a real shot at becoming the next china!
Regardless of issues between China and India. China story is inspiring. India is on the same track. No need to be American fanboys anymore. These two nations are becoming self sufficient and stronger
Thanks! This is an absolutely amazing write up. I feel the same way and the constant hate most Indian American blinders give India is so disgusting to read.
I’m an Indian-American (naturalized). I agree with OP. But everyone has their own trade offs to make in their lives. OP seems to be happy with economic growth in India which seems to be his main reason to move there. Some ppl still look at the “classic” factors like pollution, population density, hygiene at public places etc as some points to in the said trade-off. Imo economic growth isn’t everything in life. Quality of life is also important. That’s where even US falls behind many European countries and India is far far behind. PS - this not hatred for India. This is just relative comparison.
@Apple how would you measure quality of life? care to provide a list of these European countries?
Do you have kids?
But search and read posts on leetcode or developers india subreddits. Most of the Indian peers have insane levels of competition. Even witch companies in india are sometimes asking LC hards and current youth is doing 2000+ leetcode/codeforces styled questions and still are unable to get or clear interviews. Of course having faang like companies on your resume might help a little but competition is 10 times more in india. Let's also not forget about 3 month notice periods and other red tape that you have to deal with on a day to day basis
Not for senior+ roles if you have worked in faang already
@Thermo plenty of Indians have gone back to India after spending some time in the US. wouldn't it make more sense to highlight their experiences?
Until you actually start looking for a job in India, you will not realize how insane the competition is. Then, you will promptly write a post asking ways to get back to US.
This sounds very plausible
The story is the same for almost all Indians who stayed in US for many years and then visited India for 1 month or so and see India drastically different from many years. They found it astonishing to see people doing Zomato and UPI. Everywhere the same story. I would say plan to visit for 1 year and then make your perception.
Dude it's always fun to vacation somewhere. Even though you're from there, you're just visiting for a month. You like it right now because it's like a "great escape" incase anything goes wrong here.
I have the same concern. Additionally I have family issues but this was a great take. Thanks OP.
