Do you think that the tech monopolies are hurting the small businesses and innovation? Apple and google controlling app markets Amazon - controlling the small sellers and building competitive products based on their analytics Google’s search engine basically showing their data and affecting airline businesses and yelp for example.
I’d wager Apples ad tracking changes did more to hurt small businesses than anything the other companies have done Im not sure I really buy the argument that big tech stifles innovation. Startups still exist and they provide niche focused products that outmaneuver big tech. For other big innovations (public cloud, hardware research, etc) they cost soooo much money to launch and build no startup would ever be able to build a competing product
I think they are definitely reducing competition (ie amazon taking business from small providers) but also Google created so many platforms for business to flourish. Ultimately best for any business to diversify their marketing channels and income streams so they can weather the changes from these tech platforms
John Oliver is a complete moron, just like all the other Late Night idiots these days.
TC?
John Oliver is absolutely right, I hope we get rid of the tech giant monopolies. More innovation!
Imagine for a minute if the App Store didn’t exist. Would we have companies like Uber, Robinhood, Snapchat, TikTok or Instagram? I don’t see how I could call an Uber or trade stocks from a damn blackberry
You could download the apps by a google search? Or from their website? Similar to how you download anything for your pc?
@amazon exactly, you are right.
John Oliver has never written a single line of code or done any engineering. There is a jumping to conclusions here that’s most convenient for the masses. Claims of innovations being hurt in tech should be commented on by folks who write new core tech, not users who monetize on tech and use it as a “platform”; because people who monetize (platform users) will always be unhappy.
Hey would you comment on the food at restaurant only after you become a chef?
Not everything is about writing code. It was more about product and business.
