I noticed that my paycheck has a deduction named “Col Vol DI”. Google search told me that’s it is a Disability Insurance. However, I never opted for one but why the heck they take money out from your paycheck? California is expensive 😭
"SDI" (state disability insurance) is mandatory. VDI (v for voluntary) or VPDI (voluntary private) is voluntary *for the company* and just means they use a third party rather than paying it directly to the state. Either way, its tiny compared to Medicare and Social Security taxes (both of which are really actually twice as big but half is paid invisibly by your employer before you see the top line number on your paycheck), let alone state or federal income tax. And it tops out at (edit; a little over) $1000 per year. It then pays you if you are off work for more than a week due to illness and for family leave. At top companies you may have better benefits than it provides but a surprising number of companies even on tech don't.
Thanks! I'm curious if $1000 is the max because my deductions towards SDI is more than $1000 already.
It's gone up since I last looked. Cap is now $1,149 and some cents for 2018. If you're already over $1,000 should be done with it soon (for the year. It will be back next year, probably with a slightly higher cap.) Sadly, unlike social security as far as I can tell you don't get any overpayment back if you switch employers mid year.
Got you you greedy capitalist. Shut up and pay your fair share. And make sure you make a happy face when your share becomes fairer what with sanctuary state implications.
Hater and dumber spotted. You know what people assume when you call CA a sanctuary state?!
Butthurt much? Get used to it. You are in CA.
Some companies have their own VDI plan that replaces California. If you opt in, the benefits are better than the state
Sure just opt out of income tax then opt out of social security then finally disability insurance. Are you a lolbertatian?
Lolbertarian, I'm gonna steal to that!
You mean tax that since taxation is theft :)
You opted in when you chose to work in California.
Those taxes aren’t there to hurt you but to help everyone else.
