No giant survived the industry by being 3rd or 4th. They are competing but not the industry leader. They both need to rethink what they want to sell. They both don't even make the cut on cloud platform shortlist. Oracle is a database company falling behind AWS. Google is an ML modeling company falling behind Microsoft's OpenAI. AWS and Azure are here to stay. And they run their cloud offerings differently even though the menu of in-house services may look similar. They both are winners. None of them will ever go as dirt cheap as IBM cloud which offers low cost outsource dev center to build data apps on IBM cloud. Best fit for companies where engineering is considered as IT department (banks, government, hospitals, hotels). So IBM is here to stay mainly with low cost dev outsourcing package in it's IBM cloud services. Google and Oracle aren't going to open their outsourcing sweatshop.
Lol
I wouldn’t underestimate Oracle. They are moving really fast and are willing to “start fresh” on networking because they practically don’t have a lot of legacy infrastructure for cloud. This means they can potentially harness more out of each GPU for the same cost, especially at scale.
That’s a good perception but not reality. What that can be done there, any one else can do it bcz everything is COTS.
Even if it’s COTS, there needs to be willingness to incur that expense now so that Oracle doesn’t steal customers from competition right now.
Salty mofo
Who says you that the 3rd or 4th (or 5th or ... 10th) can't survive? What's that based on?
For example, the 3rd and 4th largest banks in the world are behemoths. Depending on how you count that may be Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase.
Says the guy who got rejected from 3rd and 4th
Why did not you search for reality instead of cooking up your own version ? Every industry has 3rd,4th and 5th and 10th. Go look out for Gartner reports for every industry how it is organised. Multi cloud is very common strategy. Go talk to any Forbes 500 company and they will be investing in either AWS+GCP or AWS+ Azure . That’s the most common setup you will get. There is clearly a space for top 3 in the industry. Oracle cloud is a joke. It’s nothing more than a glorified database. IBM Cloud will remain the distant player. That’s how it will be for long time to come.
i always have to remind myself that oracle is still alive
This is the story of America. It’s always been a 2-party system. Historically: Coke vs. Pepsi Apple vs. Microsoft GM vs. Ford Miller vs. Bud Dems vs. Reps And so on… The fact is, the general public loves to watch the 2-party battles so much that the others are just left out of the conversation. Come/pepsi battles have demolished the competition, Microsoft/Apple don’t let anyone rule the desktop (ignore the noise from OSS), and so on. The goal is to prevent the 3’s and 4’s from ascending.
Apple vs Microsoft vs Linux GM vs Ford vs Chrysler vs Toyota vs Honda vs Nissan vs... Miller vs Bud vs Michelob vs Coors vs ... Having only 2 parties is not the case in other democracies where "first past the 50% post" takes all. So the only example left standing is Coke and Pepsi. 🤷♂️
One thing is to sell digital ads in a market Google has pretty much created and leads. Another thing is to sell SW and solutions to big businesses who have been buying it from Microsoft, IBM and Oracle for many decades. Investments, relationships and trust just don't happen overnight and Google has a track record of deprecating solutions. Which one would you choose to partner with, the new kid that has proven unreliable and has let you (or someone you know) down or the stable adult that has always had yours and your friends backs?
Strongly agree with your point about how deprecation-happy Google is. That said, of the 3 enterprise software vendors you mentioned, Google Cloud is well ahead of 2 of them (IBM and Oracle).
No giants survived being 3rd or 4th? Big 4 banks, Big 4 accounting firms would like to differ!!
Who TF uses Azure
Azure is used by a lot of companies that are already bought into the Microsoft ecosystem and want to bring that to the cloud
