Curious to know if anyone uses Oracle Cloud in their company? If not, what kind of cloud do you use?
Yes, we use it. What do you think powers AWS?
lol.. AWS is a good IaaS company and thats it!
Just IaaS? Riiiight.
I suspect Oracle Cloud is used by shitty old school enterprise (same as rest Oracle products) where normal engineers would never work. so these companies are not presented on Blind and you won't get any response
thanks for not responding
lol don't be offended by the truth
Serious question, what is oracle cloud? How different is it from Amazon RDS?
serious answer, check out https://cloud.oracle.com/home
Omg. So many buzzwords. I don't know even know what it is still.
What does Oracle Cloud do better than others?
Have more buzzwords per sentence on their website
It's a one stop shop. For large customers, such as Exxon, integrating IaaS + SaaS + PaaS + hybrid cloud is a pain in the a*s. Let alone finding a vendor that offers all these (I think only Azure is on par currently). To illustrate, say bank X go to AWS IaaS, they need Okta identity management, SAP CRM, Apps Dynamics, Cloud Foundry, Oracle DB, etc.. Five vendors to integrate, that's over a 12mo project and millions in cost.
No.
Every company makes its employees drink its KoolAid on its own products. Now some people understand that it's just KoolAid and try to understand the entire business picture; others start using adjectives generously. Oracle Cloud is used by a lot of customers and so is AWS. Most big companies run their payments infrastructure using Oracle because of the high fidelity strongly consistent guarantees provided by the Oracle database. However, the customers that use it, are just making the world run, you know like Banking, Airlines, Shopping, Telecommunications, etc. They are not cool and trendy: for example, Snapchat uses Google Cloud Platform. Snapchat is cool - so GCP must be the best cloud provider there is. This is typically the mentality young engineers have. There is no point in trying to elicit responses on Blind where the majority of people think not working at Uber, G, FB, NFLX means that: "Man.. he dumb.."
wasn't the question about Oracle cloud? everyone knows people pay Oracle absurd amounts of money for other things
The challenge with Oracle is that it is real serious business. Having worked and scaled Oracle instances to handle billion transactions per day, I can confirm it is still the best transactional database out there by far and gets back the money’s value in much less operating cost. But then it stops there. You can do only one thing with Oracle Db - consistent database. And this is very serious limitation. It can’t do what elasticsearch does, it can’t be tuned for application desired consistency, it can’t be used as document store, it can store petabytes of log data . This is the reason why Oracle DB is uncool. All the cool companies demonstrated that one can build $100 billion valuations company without paying millions to a third party. The same amount can be used to develop capabilities in House. And this is seriously cool idea - this means people get to work on cool technologies which means they earn more and build better resume over period of time. For startups, paying 10,000 USD in license for oracle instance is a decision of existence and not of choice. Current companies in banking, airlines and old age retailers are in existence mostly because of protective regulations. My bank takes three days to send me a statement. Most of the airlines websites sucks leading to huge number of bookings through new age websites. Any retailer who can’t update prices frequently enough is running out of business. Part of all these can be traced to simply the fact they don’t have a good performant database which can handle scale. The choice is never between cool and uncool. This is one’s own mental construct. The choice is between what works (pays more) and what doesn’t. Oracle simply does not work beyond consistent writes. And hence there is no real benefit in going with a cloud provider which has a legacy of charging customers to death. And hence Oracle cloud is uncool.
just bing about it. seems like AT&T is onboarding to Oracle. https://www.oracle.com/corporate/pressrelease/oracle-and-att-050417.html
