I've been serving as a Senior Fullstack Engineer (P50) at Atlassian, and I recently received an invitation to interview for the Oracle IC-5 (Senior Principal) position with their OCI team in Australia. While platforms like levels.fyi suggest Oracle offers higher compensation, the figures shared by the recruiter and manager align closely with my current total compensation of 410k AUD. Considering the heightened responsibilities associated with a more senior role, this proposed salary seems rather conservative to me. I'm eager to learn from others who have navigated similar situations—were they successful in negotiating a higher pay package? Additionally, I've hit a bit of a roadblock in advancing beyond the senior level internally. I'm more than 4 years in the company, so refreshers won't take my TC higher in Atlassian anymore, only promotions would. Given the higher rank in Oracle, this could help open up other future possibilities, so I'm contemplating a move even if the compensation remains comparable, viewing it as an opportunity to break free from this stagnation.
Oracle is a horrible company with very incompetent management. Politics everywhere - even at junior engineering levels. The refreshers at Oracle are either nonexistent or extremely low and totally depend on the negotiation power of your manager and skip. So only move if they offer a significant bump over your current comp. Cause it won’t go up from there. Those skunks do appraisals every 13-15 months to reduce 1 appraisal every 4 years and management tries every trick in the book to avoid having to talk about growth and compensation. Levels and titles have no meaning and almost never have much correlation to work and are very inflated at Oracle. Everyone in the industry knows this. If you decide to jump to Oracle, be extremely sure that your manager is a competent and decent person. Otherwise you’re toast. The software is garbage and processes - nonexistent. You’ll notice folks doing real crappy engineering cause - “Larry wants it this way”. I’d rather slave at AWS than go to OCI.
Sounds like you are misinformed. That is not the case how you just described it.
Completely true and to the point. If you’re really stuck at Atlassian growth-wise, you could think of taking the Oracle position as long as you negotiate a very good TC upfront. The days of great refreshers and easy promos are long gone.
IC5 is called consulting member of technical staff in OCI and DB organizations. Senior principal application engineer is IC5 in Apps
Atlassian comp is negotiable, and we won’t revoke an offer if you try to negotiate. I’d try to negotiate more. That said, even with all the issues Atlassian is having, we are still miles better culture wise than Oracle. Even if it was even comp, I would take the Atlassian offer every day just for the quality of life (I say this as someone whose spouse works for Oracle).
Yoe?
Not seen an external ic5 in a while now. Be aware the IC5 role is sort of less technical and more political in nature at times. What Org?
