Oracle/OCI

Hey everybody, I'm looking to interview at OCI and maybe switch if get a job. I have been a generalist engineer for the last 5 years. Mainly working on Js, Python, Vue, Node, AWS and more recently the last year have been doing Java and some light Scala + Spark work. Also about to complete a Masters degree in CS soon. What's it like working at Oracle? What's the work life balance like? What's the interview process like? Can I get referrals please, are they even useful?

This is all OCI specific, can't speak for other orgs Pros: -Great ICs. Maybe not 100% rock star but the asshole:not asshole ratio is great, and most people are passionate about making things better -Good comp (at the very least, I don't think there is much attrition that is specifically comp related, which means it is at least competitive) -Nice offices -I've not seen wild RTO enforcement Cons -There is definitely some toxic leadership. The layer that this kicks in, and under what circumstances, varies wildly per org, it may not impact you. Generally I feel this has gotten better, but that's purely anecdotal, YMMV -Annual stock vesting is a cruel joke, especially in the context of random layoffs. First world problems I know, but the most annoying thing is that you can set your watch to a whole bunch of good (and inevitably burnt out) people departing based on the vesting dates -They believe DevOps works. And I'm not saying it can't, but a: trying to enforce DevOps-like process in orgs that aren't dev OR ops at their core is not going to work, and b: shouting DevOps and expecting it to work without further investment in process, tooling or effective staffing levels is like Michael Scott declaring bankruptcy -Zero transparency around the performance review/promo/RSU/bonus/merit increase process. I don't think any company gets this perfect, but you aren't even made aware of what you _might_ be eligible for, it's completely shrouded in secrecy (and more often than not, you get nothing, which is worth being mindful of on your way in) I've been here ~5 years and change. It's not without it's frustrations but on balance I'm pretty happy.
