My younger cousin is looking to pivot from corporate strategy into strategy consulting without going to business school. They have 4 YOE, non-target UG, 180K TC Any insight on whether OW, EYP, LEK, Kearney, S& would consider them?
Any info on level, company or industry
I can only speak from a S& perspective. It’ll be a very tough sell from a non target school irrespective of YOE. Would strongly recommend looking into our target business schools to have a real shot.
Any fresh grad or early professional looking to get into strategy consulting needs to be clear with their exit plan. Are you sacrificing everything to make partner or are you doing 2 years and out? It has to be very clear for yourself otherwise you will always be tempted to stick out one more year with a dangling carrot in front of you
Im at S&. DM me. I could look into the profile and provide a referral.
Very hard to get in from industry compared to going in from bschool but it’s not impossible. Depends on his undergrad, the company, and the industry.
Yes, would even suggest mbb. Target vs non target is mostly important for university recruiting. For lateral hires likely not so much.
Thanks. Aside from mba recruiting, I heard MBB only hires externally from other consulting shops and/or candidates with 8+ experience in a specific field, no?
Rule of thumb is that it depends, especially as the vast majority of hires are straight out of undergrad, mba or phd. Like if you get a partner or alum in good standing to vouch for you then you’ll probably get an interview. Without that, you need something more tangible like visibility or recognition in your industry. It’s not as simple as having yoe, you need to be able to offer something to the firm like real expertise or potential clients. All things equal, industry experience is more valued than experience at other consulting shops since you have existing relationships at potential clients. Lateral movement across consulting firms is hard unless you’re moving downstream.
