Overemployment Scam

You might have seen many posts in Blind where people are doing multiple remote jobs and able to earn more money. But some group of people are taking this to the next level and making this as a Scam. The scam starts with a Asian body shop hiring a Front-person who is in US and gives the interview. The offer is 10% of the salary they will get if the person clears the interview and maintain employment. The entire work will be done by a cheap hire in Asian/South-America/Eastern-Europe. Most of the time, in meetings, the person will not even turn on the camera, or will have a really bad video quality. 70% of open positions in Startups are remote. They also have lesser means to employ device security and other mechanisms to track employees. This scam is threatening the overall remote work and these bad actors will push the industry to go back to In person. If you are in a startup and you see someone's really bad performance in comparison to interview, just know that your company might be getting scammed. Why is it mostly people at New who have such dumb takes?

DoorDash bGPc08 Jul 29, 2023

Maybe some of them are treated poorly and only know to treat others that way?

Juniper SundrJobs Jul 29, 2023

This is not new. This disgusting tactic has been around for a long time.

Fortinet SwamiBro Jul 29, 2023

True, it has been going from last 20 years. I did some Research and found that they did this even with work from office. Just WFH has made it super easy, and on scale.

Amazon workguy13 Jul 29, 2023

Nope.

Honestly, only startups that have zero sense of how to hire, or want to pay super low and are desperate for anyone fall for these things. If you have competent people doing the hiring, do HireRight type background checks, and pay enough to be able to compete for conventional talent (US-educated with history at well-known companies), it's easy to evade scammers. If your aim is to hire a self-taught hidden gem for half-market rate, and you're cutting corners by not doing background checks, fewer number of interviews, not buying booths at conferences/usergroups/hackathons, you're asking to be scammed. If you pay Bangalore salary you will hire someone in Bangalore only. You just won't know it.

Fortinet SwamiBro Jul 29, 2023

LOL, who runs the background checks? They are run by same contractors from Bangalore 😂. Look up who coded Hire Right, it is Suresh! All those database are filled with Fake Profiles.

Microsoft Return to Jul 29, 2023

Lol you have some issues if you think HireRight has a tie-up with the same people doing employment scams.

Fortinet SwamiBro Jul 29, 2023

Yes I can confirm this. It is true, this is going on massive scale, I was just waiting for someone to speak up. This is also reason why jobs have become hard to find.

Meta ywbm Jul 29, 2023

then how they are handling meetings if they aren’t aware of whats going on? how they are handling meeting conflicts?

Amazon tapsi OP Jul 29, 2023

It’s not like Meta, most people don’t even turn on Cameras, even in 1:1s.

Fortinet SwamiBro Jul 29, 2023

As if you speak a lot in meetings! If you speak less, only necessary and to the point, you can easily get through this.

Fortinet SwamiBro Jul 29, 2023

Move to Hyderabad

Hopper bunny hop Jul 29, 2023

Damn and here I’ve been scamming myself by doing all of my own work.

Amazon andy.jassy Jul 29, 2023

Lol

Meta 0073735963 Jul 29, 2023

Remote workplaces should require 2 week team orientation in person and 1 week per quarter in person with team. Automattic, which has been permanently remote for 10+ years, has always kept this as best practice. That would be a lot harder to scam. I honestly hate work travel, especially with a family, but it side-steps 99% of the problems with remote work.

Uber scHR67 Jul 29, 2023

You can still be overemployed and offshore lol you are still the front facing client

Microsoft Return to Jul 29, 2023

Btw that entire Hacker News thread is astro-turfed by startups shilling their solution to a problem that might not be as big as they make it out to be (very common on HN which is basically an organic marketing vector for YC startups).

GrubHub qep Jul 29, 2023

I know some object, but if a company is remote I support enforcing the use of cameras

Wtf, why should people be punished because companies are not competent enough to prevent this
