Hi all, I'm a software engineer at Tesla, hired last August right out of university, but I have 1 year of experience via co-op at Apple. After this whole back to office thing and E's rampage that clearly demonstrates (to me, anyway) a shift in company values in the wrong direction, I'm considering leaving. I spoke with my manager about this out of respect for his difficulty in this situation as well, and he wants to keep me. That's great news, except that I don't have much interest in staying. I asked for a comp increase, specifically base pay since the stock price has not improved since I joined and I don't want any more golden handcuffs. What can I expect? I said I need at a bare minimum to have inflation covered plus a bump up to median compensation ($135k) for me to consider staying. I did not specify what I would be satisfied with, since I really don't know. I'd consider asking for $170k, but my instinct tells me that's a big jump for an "entry level" guy, even if I am performing well and taking on tough projects on my own. TC: $130k
For 1 YOE, I doubt it would be any larger than $150k, unless you’re some force multiplier on their team.
Definitely not a force multiplier, but I also definitely field a lot of requests and I haven't ever been the type to say "No", just "I have higher priority things on the list, this has to wait"
Elon hasn't had to retain engineers in a company with an already inflated stock price before. It will take him a few more years and it will be ugly. And you will not get a raise fair for the amount of effort you put in.
My colleague get raised to senior for 1yr and 9 mos
What org is your colleague in? I'm in dlau org (software)
Just leave. Serious advice. You won’t get 170k maybe a 5k raise.
I'm strongly considering it. If I may ask, are you staying / satisfied with what the company "does for you"?
I'm not necessarily in it for the money, but honestly if the job is stressful and miserable, I would like to be well compensated for it. If it were a chill job I'd be fine with them just covering inflation.
I would consider leaving also. Most managers right now can't get raises after Elon's email or it is a pittance. Plus you didn't get the last "market adjustment" raise last month or will you get the new COLA raise approved for this fall. Both of those raises required you to be at Tesla 1 year from last December.
was the market adjustment substantial?
3-9% depending on where you were in the pay band.
Ouch... Good to know. My manager wants to keep me, but if he doesn't actually have the freedom to choose to pay me more... That's rough
Elon doesn’t give raises to peons. Start prepping for interviews.
Oh I'm already starting 😅
