Not talking about deductables or student loans. Deductables or premiums or taxes doesn't matter. What matters is the real cost. Everyone is discussing who should pay the bill. But no one is asking why are the bills so ridiculously high in US? Even with insurance negotiations everything is at least doubly expensive compared to most expensive PRIVATE hospital in Europe. It's the same fucking MRI machine. Why the fuck hospitals allowed to charge what they want? Why cant i know the price beforehand? 90% of healthcare is NOT emergency. Same with universities. Why does government lend for ultra high tuitions for useless degrees? Most people would prefer a place with low tuition without a hockey stadium or fancy dorms or hundred student clubs.

PSA to overachievers: Please take it easy
The prices are because of the insurance and the malpractice insurance. The prices insurance companies actually pay are very different from the stated price, and the prices for people who are paying by cash with no insurance are also different. You should be able to find this information online easily.
WRONG. malpractice insurance is very small part of healthcare costs. I am talking about what insurance company paying being too much. not even stated sticker price. You should be able to find this information online easily.
I’m extremely familiar with the medical industry. The fastest way to change prices is to change who is paying the bill. If a no for profit government organization was footing the bill, the prices you see would be tiny.
And anyone who says they are okay sharing their hospital room with 3 other people is someone who has never spent more than a single night in a hospital.
i did. outside US i shared it with 5 people. it was fine. if you want private room, you pay it yourself. most people don't care that much.
Good for you. I’ve shared and it was horrible. You can’t rest and recover when there are people moaning and causing a ruckus. I’ve had private rooms and recovery is so much easier.
There are tens of thousands of articles on both of these subjects; your employer has a list.
The prices keep growing in health and universities. Patient agrees to get care from a provider. Provider overcharges, and it is ok, because you only pay a copay or they throw in anything "for free" that is "covered". Insurance gets milked. Then when your insurance premium goes up every year, most people blame the insurance instead of questioning why every item was priced so high. I saw that last week, an executive order was signed for transparency for healthcare cost and quality. No idea what it will do, but at least it is getting some attention and it needs more. https://www.cnbc.com/video/2019/06/24/trump-signs-executive-order-to-increase-health-care-transparency.html
We just went to a provider who in the first visit ordered a test that ended up costing us 2000$! This cost was not revealed to me beforehand. It just comes to you as a claim after the test is done. Freaking unbelievable what a scam this Healthcare system is in US.
Why isn't this price stated up front? Even if it is not out of pocket, running tests is revenue for them and you never see the bill before agreeing. You are right, is a complete scam.
They all talk about it. Constantly.
Because Americans are too stupid to understand this simple thing.
People are stupid and have magical thinking that if college is good for some people it's good for all. They think marginal utility is the same as average utility of a degree was in the past, for people who actually used the time (stem). They don't realize that if everyone has one, it becomes a minimum requirement. They think any easy degree is an automatic entitlement to good wages. They take out loans no matter the price and expect others (employers, tax payers and holders of US dollar-priced assets (ie your retirement investments)) to pay for it via higher taxes, inflation, and artificially high real wages (w/o understanding that reduces jobs). They just do what everyone else does, like a herd.
What if a candidate speak for real? "we dont need any new taxes, current budgets are enough for covering everyone. But we will only pay for the cheap stuff that works. We wont spend a million dollars to extend a 80 years old's life by 6 months. We won't pay for the expensive brand name, generic one is good enough. We won't pay for the new cancer drug that only saves 20% of the patients. You'll share your hospital room with 3 others." Most people would be ok with this.
Until you are the 80 year old, or the 20% that would have their life saved?
20% was a probability. Costs matter and you need to optimize limited resources. Otherwise US healthcare nonsense happens. you can spend the same money on an intervention that has 60% chance of working on some other people. I wouldn't care if i was the 80 years old.
