I have signed offer from AWS for SDE2 role. I’ve been reading about PIP at AMZN and sounds scary. I am looking for honest insights about PIP How often does PIP happens? Not everyone can be top performer, does average performers also get PIPed? Is there a target set for every team that certain percentage will get PIPed?

I am in the same boat but i got an offer for a qa role at amazon Alexa. After reading about so many PIP experiences it makes me wonder if i should move forward with my offer or not . I have a competing offer but from a smaller company . I have read that in some cases people are put in PIP within 3 months of joining . Being on h1b thats one of my biggest concern . Since we will be wfh mostly so there will be limited interaction with the manager and onboarding might also be challenging .
Amazon uses stack ranking. Each org has certain quota to fill for LE (Least efficient). Being LE automatically put you on dev plan. Dev plan is a light PIP. But the goal is much more achieveable. Still a bad record and will slow your career significantly.
Will you know if you’re put on dev plan? And anyway to know how you “stack” against everyone else?
I don't know any org who is not using stack ranking.
No, your manager keeps it secret, you don’t know if you are on dev
If you guys are on h1b do not risk your life with Amazon. My friend is on h1b and he was put on dev without knowing, he had to leave later and lucky enough to find anew job, but 1.5 years after amazon now he still has mental issue as a result of the experience. Do not gamble your h1b.
My role is in qa , do you think there will be similar challenges .
It’s the same everywhere, the target to be put in Dev pip is the same. So even if you perform you can still be put in dev list to meet target, but most happens when you do not get along w manager, or manager likes others more. Hit or miss here. If your manager is white and your teammates are white when you are on h1b from India let’s say, you have more chance of being in pip due to culture difference (thus not manager fav)
Don’t join this shitty company. Even during these rough times, they are still PIPing employees, just so that they meet their 5% quota, with no consideration of visa status and lack of job opportunities outside. If you are on H1b and you do join Amazon, make sure you always a have plan B.
This man is legit in what he is saying, I hate to see another h1b suffering due to bad management at amazon. Think twice !
Unbelievable
I have 9 years of experience but i never imagined that I will go through this much paranoia and anxiety after receiving an offer from one of the world’s most successful company . I am so confused about wether to proceed further or not. There are hundreds of posts about Amazon pip on blind and quora .
I love working at Amazon. Only bottom 5% of each org gets PIP. Have a positive attitude, don’t be a pain in the ass to your Manager, work hard, get your shit done, respect the LPs, and you’ll be fine.
Its not about positive attitude, its the fear we are talking about..We can always work hard and blah blah but if you have constant fear at the back of your mind then this is scary.
To give another example, an L6 on my x team moved his whole family here from Cincinnati, he was obviously a miss hire but it’s the manager who didn’t do a good job of hiring or coaching. The manager made decision to pip him as soon as 2-3 months in. The poor guy sold his house and uprooted his life here. I didn’t know what happened to him. But that’s the only legit pip I have witnessed, even though cruel. All other pips I have seen is due to manager not liking the person or using dev to block the person moving to next team. When you are on dev for this reason you are 99% on pip so don’t even try to work thru it. Amazon is a cruel place. If you have greencard it’s ok to gamble. If not, be careful. Like I said, my friend did go mental thru pip, he is still recovering till this day. I have 17 years of experience w 4 years here. Sincere advice. Amazon hires to pip them later after getting new ppl in...the bar raiser mentality.
there are a lot of other companies here. he is getting mostly cash so he’s not missing out on much. he’s fine but how do you mishire a L6? The external hire L6’s I’ve seen are better than internal promo’d L6
We can mis hire on most levels. The guy got hired was a bigger boss in another company I guess, then moving here L6 is very operational and he wasn’t catching on that fast compared to freshly graduated (who can do excel better), l6 at Amazon is doer, not strategic level. So it’s an issue for more senior person somewhere else.
I was a top performer at Amazon. Still got piped. One of the worst company to work for. After I left Amazon i make more money, more peace, more WLB. I won’t even join Amazon again even for 1M base. Happy life is worth more than any shit. And definitely Amazon is one of the shittiest company in the world. Save your ass if you can.
You are absolutely right about this !
How is it going for you bro ?
