cs grad. Former college baseball player. Got a opportunity to work in front office of a MLB team on operations side, long term outlook would be director (5 years) or possibly assistant GM or GM (10-15 years) Initial role pays like shit, ~70k but will be fulfilling for me. On the other side, I’ve been mainly interviewing for SE, SA and AE roles and for most of them the base alone is 120-130k with definitely a easier path to higher TC. If money wasn’t a thing, baseball front office all the way but not sure.
go with the higher comp. You can spend that extra 60K for your passion.
No other way to really fulfill the passion with money. Even though it doesn’t pay well, super hard to get into. And it’s the only way to possibly become GM one day
Passion doesn't pay the bills
I agree. But the ceiling for baseball is higher, just not guaranteed
If you really feel like this is an opportunity you won't have again, do it for a year and reassess. By then you'll know if the grass really is green on the other side.
This is one of those questions I wouldn’t ask blind
Yeah probably true
Baseball 100% Money will come. Youth is the time to take risks; you’ll never have this chance again. You can always get a job as a SWE for 120+
Does your passion have bring any ‘value’ for anyone else?
Really just me
Then you may not make money in the short term. As money is an exchange for value. Again no one knows the future ..you could turn out of one the greats. Do what you enjoy 💯.
Not a chance in hell you’re making assistant GM or GM in 10-15 years. Best case scenario is you’re crunching Bayesian statistics in a damp basement with a bunch of nerds for next to no money.
I’ll be on operations side. Normal progression is director within 4-5 years then going to AGM role. Baseball has a up or out system. So if you’re not headed for upwards trajectory they’ll most likely let you go.
It’s not as meritocratic as you think. Ask me how I know.
If you are a young RCG go with the MLB for a few years and decide later while doing some side projects to hone your CS skills. A friend of mine joined a 2A team as the personal translator of a player they signed and went on with him to the major league. Money was shit but there are things you can only do when you're young. Now that guy is a lawyer licensed in multiple countries.
Definitely follow your passion. The TC will be meaningless to you a few years down the line.
As someone who couldn’t break into the sports field bc I graduated during Covid and had to take a more open path, go with the baseball job. Fantastic networking opportunities and you can always transition to another Industry if you want to get a higher TC. 70k matters more if I understand where you are living. Is it HCOL? Other thing to consider (as you know) is baseball is basically year round so work/life balance isn’t the best. Go with your passion!!
HCOL city but i current live about 30 mins outside which reduces cost of rent quite a bit.
I say with 100% certainty go with your passion then. My mentor was head of partnerships for a MLB team and has had the time of his life. His only advice to me was maybe to consider a different sport because of the length of season/WLB. Congratulations! Hope you’re excited

Why Worshipping Lord Ram Important in Hinduism?
Do whatever you want that will maximize your happiness. Short term success could mean long term unhappiness
That’s true but i also feel like it’s harder when you’re comparing living very frugally to being comfortable. It’s easier when you’re comparing 200k to 300k.
