Was trying to search around Blind, but couldn’t find this topic. If it’s floating around, please let me know! :) Any Product Managers out there who eventually transitioned to a General Manager role later in their careers? If so, what did your path look like? Thanks!
I’ve discussed this in random past threads. The population of Product Managers has exploded and there are only so many paths for growth up the PM ladder. I see the PM to GM path becoming a viable, well tread path in the years to come as PMs move up the chain of general management and operational management within companies. If you have opportunities to manage multi-disciplinary teams or own P&L in your product role, you have a good opportunity to make the case for it. I don’t know how feasible it is at larger companies since groups are quite siloed but smaller companies will definitely have these opportunities.
GMs and CEOs at Intuit have been product managers in the past. Try to look them up on LinkedIn since we can’t mention names
In F500, in my industry, the career path goes TPM (product) - Sr TPM - Principal TPM (IC path) If you want to explore the people leader path, it looks like this TPM - Sr TPM - Manager - Sr. Manager - Director - Sr Director - Executive In BIG TECH, it looks like this: PM-T/TPM/Principal/PM ............... 15-18 years later.........GM J/K - but big tech does require more years of experience
