Im curious what people think about Google vs FB vs Amazon. What are the best parts of the role at each? The worst parts? If you have experienced two or more, which would you choose (assuming comp was a wash)? Is there another large company with good comp you would choose over those? LinkedIn? Netflix? #pm #productmanager
How do you get into PM?
There are obviously exceptions but in general: Google product culture is bottom up and in many orgs engineering drives PMs. Sort of spraying and praying, but with little consequence! Fb is mixed and PMs drive their eng but shoot a lot of darts and hope some stick. Amazon is mostly top down where the dear leader tells you what to do and engineering is led by PMs for execution. Your head is on chopping block if you fail
This description is precisely why, personally, I'm a fan of PMing in FB
How do these companies differ in terms of scope for PMs (for example, L5) and the growth opportunities? I’ve always feared that as an FB PM I wouldn’t have a lot of responsibilities and scope, esp. compared to my position in Azure.
Is it fair to say that they all have an equal barrier of entry ?

Worked at fb now at Google. Fb felt very “up or out” where everyday you were competing to prove your importance. Google you feel less pressure to perform but have to deal with a fair amount of politics. Depends where you are in life stage. I’d say if you have no family and love work.. You’ll do well at Facebook. I’d bring a Facebook pm over a Google pm to a startup any day.
"competing to prove your importance" - how exactly do you do that?
This is good input. I’ve heard from many friends about Google politics. I’ve dealt with up or out cultures and frankly don’t like it in a product org. It’s hard for growing companies to do that and retain talent.

PM at Google is best. You’ll be happiest. You’ll be least meaningful though. Engineers drive the conversations and OKRs. You’ll want something, and the TL will say “we’re gonna do this” and that’s what will happen. You’ll probably have a lot of fun and do a lot of social events with your team. FB will be more stressful. You’ll actually drive product initiatives. You might organize some social events. You won’t be as happy as at Google, but you’ll have a real voice. Idk about amazon, I’ll be working there in a week. Source: prior eng at Google, current eng at Fb, soon to be eng at Amazon
I’m a PM in Google Cloud and the eng driven culture that I hear about isn’t true here. A lot of the what needs to be done is PM driven. I actually felt like my time at Microsoft was more eng pressured than at Google
Well, fwiw, Cloud org at Google has its own culture as compared to rest of the company.
