I've done niche software implementations, strategy, solution architecture, etc for F500 clients for just under 4 years. Trying to move into true tech right now but struggling. Can't even get my foot in the door. I'd love to come in as am APM but I'm seeming overqualified given my time working, and underqualified to be a full PM. Thoughts on how I should proceed?
Go for a smaller company to start
Go for a smaller company to start. Big companies are going to expect PM’s to have product experience and long term responsibility for features that you lack.
Even if you’re overqualified, go for apm roles to start. It doesn’t pay terribly these days and people will respect that you’re willing to start lower on the totem pole.
I've applied to many, and usually quickly get a rejection email or nothing at all. Hence tough to get in the door :/
If you had made the switch earlier (say 2 years in for APM) do you think you would have had the right amount of experience? Obviously it’s not the same for everyone, but I’m curious for your case
I lean towards no, as I'm guessing you're a bta at Deloitte wondering the same thing. I think it's just easier to hiring some junior at (insert top 10 school here), then some tech analyst with no relevant product experience.
Go for SWE. There’s thousands in your position aiming for PM.
I've considered this but I don't feel like I'm quite qualified enough to call myself a software engineer. None of my job involves true coding, so my only experience is personal stuff. Tough to sell that as experience, no?
Leetcode my friend.
