1/ How many total Engg to PMs typically? 2/ What is the span of influence for PMs (#Engg) by level, specifically L7, L7.5 and L8 at G?
My team had one PM for 30 engineers
That’s nuts! 6-10 seems to be range per Google
Google doesn't have a uniform execution process across teams so it may vary. But in my org there is no such thing as eng assigned to PMs and PMs can work with eng across orgs. This means its difficult to really give a ratio but across my product areas I work with 50+ engineers who may be working on featurea driven by other PMs or their TLMs This is not uncommon as far as I can see.
Makes sense at an individual level. At the HR and exec level, they definitely have ratios of Engg, PM, UX they’re targeting. It varies by product because some have more user surface area. And varies by company because they have different products and also difference cultures...
Divide by zero exception in my org 😂
My team has one PM for 8 Engs
Never seen a set ratio at Uber. As a platform engineer, who is occasionally at odds with the PMs, I’ll say that Uber is easily the company where the PMs get the most room to maneuver and deliver. You not only get your engineers but also the support of platform engineers to ship if what you’re working on is important. It sometimes make my life as a platform eng tough but I understand the value this approach brings. I don’t know why any talented and ambitious PM would ever work at Google versus the other two. Uber and FB are two of the best product companies in the industry.
