Do you want to stay in PM or move into something else? And why?
PM Modi should go, have had enough of him!
Why dya havta make everything here about India all the times?
Left PM 2 years ago (8 years in PM) to SWE. Too many charlatans in PM now due to all the Gen Z PM influencers. Tech industry now recognizes this and paring down positions. Questionable value add in a post-ZIRP regime. I've done actual value add work launching products with hundreds of millions in revenue. When I was acquired by a big legacy tech company, the position turned into that guy who got laid off by the Bobs in Office Space. I pass the specs from the customers to the engineers. I talk to the engineers so the customers don't have to. I have people skills goddamit. Good thing I have top 10 BS/MS CS degrees to fall back on. The MBA that I did was worthless.
After 8 years as a PM does switching to SWE entail a level drop? I see you have technical education background, but were you ever working as a SWE prior to product?
Same Q as yvj I've been considering doing the same, 10yoe in pdm but its too saturated.
Nah I want to do this until I die
whatever pays more money. You guys actually care about role and shit ?
I actually chuckled at this
Leave! No PM I know enjoys their role and just loves their TC. Life too short to spend most of your week doing miserable “stakeholder alignment” (aka political bullshit)
B2c is still great. B2B is dreadful
I'm a loser cause I love my job and tolerate my TC well enough
PMing in small to mid startups is incredible, y’all should try it
Lol as someone who has done that at 3 separate ones now, no it isn’t. It is a shit show.
Wait I want more people to jump in on this debate
Law. If I’m gonna work my ass off id like to at least have job security and tangible work
Gonna get a law degree?
Who do you think is a cost center ina recession Smh
As a PM, I hate what I do, and in many ways, I feel the role has made me resentful to the industry as a whole. It’s opened my eyes to the sheer volume of incompetence that sits across leadership in many organizations. I have come to the conclusion that I will probably be leaving the tech industry altogether within the next two years or so.
Please we have the same perspective. Where will you go next?
I haven’t fully decided yet. I’ve been debating starting a local services business.
Coming from 10yrs in development... It's either babysitting engineering who are too preoccupied with keeping themselves busy, with the perception of productivity, or refining things ad nauseam without any concept of roles, users, or dependencies outside of engineering. If that isn't depressing enough it's watching groundhog's day play out in slow motion as years go by without addressing basic fundamental customer needs because leadership's attention is on the next shiny thing and some rationalization of why it's best not to address those needs now. It's a challenging role like all the others, because there's no investment in management as a skill or strategy.
PMs are some of the most unbearable people. Always complaining that their job isn’t real PM and they want to find a real PM role.
While only asking ETA and tracking timelines and not doing the real PM jobs themselves.
The post is about PRODUCT management. Not PROJECT …
