POLL - Ethical companies to work for during these layoff

worked in SAP for almost 14 years. hiring was freeze almost 6 months ago; I think there are no rumours of layoff as of now considering all techs are doing layoff It doesn’t pay like FAANGs but at times like this there is lot of Mental peace at SAP Companies should also be responsible in hiring considering market conditions and I think SAP has done it’s due diligence long back. Comment about your company on work culture so we all know our next move :) #tech #techcareer #sap #meta #aws #amazon

It is not that companies are unethical. It is the corporate game that leads to situations like this. Executives are incentivized to be ambitious, have aggressive goals, and make all they can to grow the company. Even though the might have the best interests in mind, the limited information and the inability to read the future will eventually lead to mistakes. When the rubber hits the road, they have to make hard decisions, and the survival of the company will always take precedence over the employment of a small percentage of their employees.

Exactly, its a product of the system. Its not a bad thing but its stupid to ask a public company to be ethical. MAYBE the ceo is ethical (not that you would ever really know). But companies don’t have morals. Leadership is going to do whatever they think is best to maximize net revenue. (But yes sometimes people might interpret cool benefits as ethical, but really its just an investment to decrease turnover)

"survival of the company" is definitely not what's at stake here. More like stock growth and shareholder interest. Thanks Jack Welch #a-hole

The Government.

Bruh, what the fuck is an ethical company. All of these companies are public. They are literally legally obligated to do everything they can to make investors money. Why would any company be ethical if it doesn’t make them money. Work on open source or for a private company if you want “”ethical””

SAP payisdrug OP Nov 15, 2022

100% correct - but when we have only options available to play with we have to evaluate who is closer :)

SAP payisdrug OP Nov 15, 2022

yes but it firing employees to make the balance sheet work is a bad management decision ! I appreciate companies specially SAP who did hiring freeze 6 months ago. how can companies avoid firing ?

There's no way. Except they become clairvoyant. What if all their bets have paid off. Would you be saying this. Imagine if Facebook,Amazon hadn't grown aggressively like it did in the past, do you think we'd even have that many people to lay off . Now that the bets didn't pay off due to macroeconomic, we all suddenly become experts

There are no ethical employers and employees. Almost all follow money. Employers seek cheapest labor they can afford. Employees seek most tc they can get. It’s a marriage of needs with no ethics involved.

Is SAP an ethical company?

SAP payisdrug OP Nov 15, 2022

to some extent yes. My experience is that due to the german culture where we have work councils who try to protect employees some global policies are helpful and protective.. also people help each other and management tries to adjust with the personal situation of employees.. I have many aspirations and would take a high paying job when market recovers… but with my 14 years at sap I was helped by management in couple of occasions

It's hilarious that people are voting for Apple & Google. What happened to child labor, walled gardens, selling your data, over charging, etc.?

Google tomato-hat Nov 15, 2022

My interpretation from OP tone is that ethical here really means “unlikely to layoff” or “stronger pro worker culture” — not like… broadly ethical.

The latter would still not apply to the fruit company given how much they overwork most employees. Not to mention the 2nd grade treatment of all the contract staff.

Google uGWfXh Nov 15, 2022

Hmm I think "ethical" and "companies" are two words that don't go together

SAP IFbw42 Nov 19, 2022

Don’t need to layoff as people are leaving in droves and hard to backfill open headcount internally. We are still under a cost reduction program so don’t expect any pay increases in 2023. And no external hiring in 2023

SAP techguruSV Nov 23, 2022

SAP is a very good company to work for during recessions. Our management team and German culture is always very risk averse and conservative which in times like this helps a lot. Hiring freeze started very early in 2022 and natural attrition has helped avoid layoffs.
