Hi all Ive been communicating w my new manager that i want to get promoted in the next cycle, gathering evidence of my successes, but recently after working on a large project i spent months diligently validating some data pipeline, my boss said he got the feedback that i execute fast but always need to have minor changes. Because of this he is wary to promote me, and mentioned that once my reputation is down its hard to get it back. He told me next time i should spend more time validating my work. This is a hard pill to swallow and i feel like it is impossible for me to succeed in my role. They always shuffle us around to diff teams. I understand that i may have made minor mistakes but those were me sharing my work to people to get feedback, and j even got the feedback on my last project from a coworker that i was very diligent in validating my code and all edge cases. So why did i get that feedback i wonder. Honestly a bit tired and its affecting my mental health. Should i move or try to prove them wrong? TC: 215K
Move if you can. This is the answer for all unfair feedback.
If manager is not willing to go to bat for you it’s time to move on.
Better to move. Note that promotions at a high-level require mote social engineering than skill set. Further if there is no business need, your promotion is not taken seriously by manager or HR
Move.
Manager hates you. Move on. He was just grasping at straws to come up with something to justify it
Move. But also don't obsess over promotion that not getting it affects your mental health. Sooner or later promotions will happen.
Currently in same exact situation. From experience, once people start seeing you in that light you can't turn it back. Now, all your work will be extra scrutinized. Things that will go though by others will not go through for you. Only thing to do is leave. I'm starting to make mistakes even me can't believe, it's a bad mental state to be in.
I was stuck under a manager who gave me lame excuses and zero direction over the entire time. You should move to a different team / company.
Move on. This is classical management gaslighting where they use anecdotes from others to determine if a report can be promoted.
