One time annual stock vesting is a scam
Kept interviewing with 15 companies and finally got one offer. She is an L3 at Google (2.5 yoe at google). Kind of stuck there with all CMEs. But salary increased because of the stock appreciation. To have TC to be more than current TC, the only option was to interview for senior level. Now the problem is whether it is sustainable and possible to perform at that level. How should she prepare, what to keep in mind, how to navigate in this situation? The company is one of { Dropbox, Doordash, Instacart, Roblox }. Her new TC 400k, 5 yoe -- 500k, 7 yoe
Instacart seems to be a risky move, no?
All seem risky, but not sure what to do.
It's not really that risky ... if it doesn't IPO within the next year or two just jump to another company
Hope she dumps you sooner than later for saying she got “lucky,” if she clearly interviewed well at that level and got an offer.
The most cliche woke comment ever ehich doesnt make any sense
Yeah sure, dump the guy who is looking for tips to grow the girl in her career, because some random guy from IBM senses jealousy based on choice of words of the said guy!
4 companies that you have mentioned, have different levels. What do you mean by L5?
If it is Doordash (which is possible) . I would tell her to be extremely aggressive during her ramp up. That is the only time she could be a little sloppy afterwords the expectations would be high and also start working on the expectations doc from the very beginning.
How long is ramp up period? 3 months?
Yes 3 months.
An L5 (Senior SWE equivalent) would be expected to ramp up and be productive pretty fast, so it's going to be rough initially. L5s are also expected to provide technical direction and mentor other engineers, and these aren't easy things to do at all if you've never done it before. But hey if she isn't able to survive for some reason, she can always boomerang back to Google within a year without having to interview right?
👆 This Expectations would be very high from l5 external hire. Get ready to sweat and put effort into skills that are non existent in l3 level. It can be done but there would be no chilling for a while. On top of that good people skills would be crucial.
“Very high” is probably an overstatement. L5 isn’t that senior.
sounds like you and/or her have imposter syndrome. She passed the interview so she will be ok. Levels are more about behaviors rather than skills and output. Enjoy the ride n the money:)
Disagree with that. Levels have an expectation around skill as well. You're not going to last as E5+ if the quality of your work is like an E3. leetcode interviews have nothing to do with your ability to build real production quality software and to do it on your own which is the expectation of a senior engineer. Just because someone passes the tests doesn't mean they can do the job. At 2.5 YOE that is not a lot of time to aquire the technical skills necessary to perform at L5.
^^this. If a senior engr falls short of meeting expectations, how long before gets piped/fired? 1 year?
Go Dropbox for saftey or Roblox for riskier but bigger potential upside. Avoid gig work companies for the next few years, their stock is gonna get hammered even more in the next year.
You have 7 YOE. Why can’t you coach her? Anyway 3 to 5 jump is a big one - there a a big gap in behavioral skills and experience which is not something you can fix by reading some things
L5 is expected to be how many YoE at these companies?
Dd at least senior is expected to have at least 5 after degree. Good l5s mostly come with more than that (7-8) and I’ve see. 5 years with l4s quite often
Y’all gonna be loaded when you retire
That's irrelevant actually. She is interested in growing in career and is passionate. Google experience kind of slowed her down.
Most swe couples are concentrated in bay area and Seattle. And unless you are making 1M+ at least in those cities you ain't really rich. Probably middle class
