My partner wants to move to Canada because she wants to get PR and eventually bring her parents there, her brother is also planning to move there for studies. I don't like to move to Canada because of the opportunities in US and I want to be in good tech and probably will switch companies every once in a while. I love the options here and TC possibilities. I'm indian and the biggest downside is green card queue and that's the only advantage I see moving to canada. What would you do in this situation, Would you move to Canada? Is this a deal breaker, how can I move our relationship forward if I don't decide to move? Tc 340k
No brainer. Ofc stay in US. Partner’s preferences with family members seem like a huge red flag tbh. Also, fyi you do not need to move to Canada to get the PR. Your partner can get it from US itself.
You are the red flag. Partner's concern for her parents is justified.
Both of you have valid points and are bringing in an excellent perspective. Canada is definitely not a country where you will be able to earn a lot and get as rich as the silly-con valley. I would suggest, applying for a permanent residence and I believe it takes a year or 2 to get a PR. After that you need to live in Canada for 3 out of 5 years. Basically you will have 3-4 years to see where life takes you from today before having to make that decision. You can also apply for jobs in Canada and see what kind of compensation you get (lower than Silicon Valley) but if you have wealth from the current employers, you should be able to get a nice home and live comfortably. Who knows, maybe your wife or your perspective changes in 3 years. Life is unpredictable. Btw side question: are you okay with living with your in-laws? Destiny is a funny thing. You never know how things are going to work out. But if you keep an open mind and an open heart, I promise you will find your own destiny.
Move to Canada. Get PR. Stay for 3 years with PR. Move back to US. Apply for Canadian passport after 2 years. This way you'll have a backup plan if you don't ever get your green card and don't want to go back to India.
Why not get Canadian citizenship after 3 years in PR itself ?
Cool story
A lot of this is up to perspective. I think that both are great countries but disagree with a few of these points. Slightly tongue in cheek alternative comparison: Canada has a comparable quality of life, and generally healthier boundaries between work and personal life Less need for a military More functional government More well distributed high quality public elementary schools and high schools, high quality and reasonably priced universities Better healthcare for the average income individual at a reasonable cost, medical debt is rarer compared to the US where it's the number one cause of personal bankruptcy More boring politics, the majority of values are aligned so it doesn't feel like life or death which party runs government Less nationalism, a higher sense that we're in this together with our allies and partners and can learn from one another Less crime and much smaller prison population per capita, US has the highest per capita prison population in the world It is very true that the US has a stronger military and willingness to use it, Canada has indirectly benefited from its strength. There's also a very different perspective towards war in Canada, and a sense that military action must always be a last resort, and that we do not want to involve ourselves in wars unless absolutely necessary. The US is also better for building a career or large scale business, there's an amazing amount of entrepreneurship here. Compensation for success is generally lower in Canada, while you also have lower costs for medical and education expenses. I like the idea of living in Canada after I get to the point where the compensation difference is no longer so important.
If you want to make more money and have the options of switching jobs then USA is a better choice. Canada has limited potential in terms of TC and number of jobs.
Wow toxic bro.
We have Canada PR (for last 2 years) and we decided to stay back in US after listening to few folks about health care. Long wait times even for moderately urgent needs (like MRI, CT-Scan for diagnosis). Our end goal was to come back and settle in US (can’t withstand winter in long term), so considering the logistics & long term goal - we decided to ride the wave like all other H1B , especially with hopes of EAD (recent trend in date movement)
Nowadays I've been hearing Indians prefer to move back to India over moving to Canada. You won't see the sun up here for 8-9 months at a time. It will take a serious effect on your health if you aren't used to it. If your goal is to work where opportunity is, its either US or India. If your goal is to work in a developed country, then US or Canada.
How about wife staying in Canada until she gets PR/citizenship? You can get PR through spouse if required later. Meanwhile, you may travel frequently and wfh to manage.
You got screwed, unfortunately 😔 doesn't matter what you do you won't be happy..better to stay here
