Past gap in resume

Hello all, I worked for a year at a company . Then had a gap of 3 years due to personal reasons . After that, working with current company for 2.5 years. In case I want to make a switch, does the past gap years affect my chances for a better opportunity ? How do I show that on my resume? Any way I can count my gap years into my overall experience? I am confused. Please guide. Thanks
