I just got an offer from Amazon for SDE1 in NYC for 160k base, 40k sign on, 125k RSU so first 4 years of comp are roughly 186k, 198k, 210k, 210k. Currently I’m making around 150k with around 3 YoE, was hoping their offer would be for SDE2. One option is to stay at C1 and the pros for that is: - I know nothing is guaranteed but looks like I’m getting promoted based on conversations with my manager and skip levels, that comp increase would bring be to around 170k TC so not a massive jump from Amazon - I’ll be done with my MSCS in the spring so I can apply around with that and more work experience - Seems like my LoB is doing pretty well all things considered and no indication of trouble. If I move to Amazon in this market it could be risky if layoffs/higher pip rate, LIFO - Worst case if I don’t get promoted or enough of a year end comp increase, at least I was safer during a bad market with pretty good WLB and I can look around later and get a higher level role and higher comp than offer Pros for going to Amazon: - Guaranteed comp increase. Also stock price is low so getting RSUs and sticking around for a few years could net out big gains - Resume boost, can use name to go to other places - I have the offer and don’t need to interview again for a while. Interviews suck and results can be very heavy on luck Thoughts?
Go amazon and go for growth. Plus more comp potential is there. I had same option but it required relocation and i wasnt open to that. But i would've taken it otherwise. This is especially true if you got sde1 due to lack of LP and system design. You will need that experience. Anyways that was my thought process. Best of luck.
I would go for Amazon if the team's work is interesting to you and you're willing to sacrifice a bit on WLB for better comp and growth opportunities (there is a ton of good work) If you take Amzn I recommend looking into the promo process early and documenting every helpful evedince from the start, then you can get SDE2 in a year or so if you're a good developer and willing to put in the work.
