Pay cut to go remote

Would you take a pay cut of about 30% to go remote. Bay Area TC: 650K Remote TC: ~400K EDIT: I don’t have a lot of expenses. Maybe a total of 70-80K annually (of which 30K in travel). But I’d like to start a family. And I’m so TIRED of this place and all the pretentiousness. RSM/Kumon classes, it makes my head spin

Absolutely

If they offered me a 30% increase to go into an office I would not take it.

Meta SPnV13 Jan 18, 2023

Thats not how it works... if i decrease 100k by 30% its 70k. If i increase 70k by 30% its 91k. You'd have to increase by roughly 43%. Would you go into the office for a 43% increase?

SoFi StillFloat Jan 18, 2023

The math lesson is cool Meta but you're overanalyzing lol

Every poll I make is always 50-50…wtf

Samsung iEtl10 Jan 18, 2023

See it other way. Either option is not a bad one.

Amazon ttltt Jan 18, 2023

250k more to be in office how is this even a question?

Apple klept OP Jan 18, 2023

That office happens to be in Bay Area …

Amazon ttltt Jan 18, 2023

So you’re saying it’s sunny? Lol

Meta richardheа Jan 18, 2023

No, I’ll just find a company not managed by dick heads.

Optum XbUr46 Jan 18, 2023

Correct answer. The vast majority of companies are now full remote with most not even having area specific adjustments. Tell them to eat a bag of dicks and find a real job.

Hopper MoonHopper Jan 19, 2023

What companies are fully remote that will still pay 650k?

Amazon FDut31 Jan 18, 2023

I had a similar option but not this much tc. I took the higher paying, in office position and hate it. I found out I don’t even have to go to office so I’m Just in the shitty city and with like 15 pct more pay and in tone of the shiftiest companies on the planet. I’d take less pay and remote in a heart beat

Apple klept OP Jan 18, 2023

Why don’t you change now ?

Amazon FDut31 Jan 18, 2023

I’ve started looking. I’m accepting relocation payback of like 20k for sanity at this point. Just need to find the right company and role

HashiCorp Karla2018 Jan 18, 2023

$250k would be too big a difference in TC for me.

Apple klept OP Jan 18, 2023

But what if you don’t want to live in that area. I’m so over Bay Area now …

HashiCorp Karla2018 Jan 18, 2023

Where do you want to move to? I was in the bay for a while, but now I’m in SoCal.

Fireblocks dONp61 Jan 18, 2023

It depends on your lifestyle, where you are moving remote to, and how much you care about COL/QOL. For example, would I take a 30% cut moving to Birmingham Alabama where f all happens and the schools are garbage? Heck naw man. But would I take that same 30% to move to Nashville, Atlanta, etc? Maybe. Different note, do you live a modest lifestyle or are you living it up? If you’re modest, doesn’t make sense to go anywhere for less $$. But if by remote you only mean wfh vs in office, the only deciding factor is your personally. Will the office drive you insane or can you tolerate/even enjoy the grind? If you’ll be miserable in the office, no amount of money is worth it end of.

Apple klept OP Jan 18, 2023

I actually like going to the office and meeting people. Always doing small talk. Have a couple of dozen engineers in my org so very people person. But outside that there is nothing to look forward here. I don’t like the weather, scenery (too dry), no lakes/mountains, houses suck bad. Hectic and competitive life esp. for kids. I want to go live in Maine or New Hampshire or maybe Washington

Google eCJy48 Jan 18, 2023

Mine was 20% and I took it.

Apple klept OP Jan 18, 2023

In absolute terms?

Google eCJy48 Jan 18, 2023

20% off my salary, 20% reduction in grants going forward. So it will take four years to adjust down. Still making $650k where I am is quite nice.

E-Space HeWhoDares Jan 18, 2023

Abso-fucking-lutely.
