Bloomberg is not Google. But Bloomberg is still not some random third-tier or fourth-tier company. There are people with degrees from Berkeley, Brown, UWaterloo working here too. These people are extremely competitive. Not only are they good at their job, but they are also good at poking holes in the plans/design/architectures that other people come up with. A lot of these people have attitudes and are outright belligerent. They don't explicitly say this but a lot of times their intention is clear. If I don't get my way I will derail your project and I will derail it in a way that you will get into trouble for it. I just want to make some money and go home and play video games and relax a bit. Maybe watch a movie or read a book, work on a hobby or something. But for the 4.5 years that I have been working here, I have been thinking about work non-stop. Even when I am at home, I am constantly thinking about the conversations I have at work. I am getting angry that I didn't respond the right way to an argument or that I didn't think of a solution to a problem that was obvious to someone who has a 2,000 rank out of 1 million candidates in a national engineering college entrance exam. These 4.5 years took an extreme toll on my mental health. I cannot imagine doing this job for another 30 years.
Degrees mean nothing.
☝️ You said it.

Find your strength. There are a ton of people who are really good at exams or other forms of competitions in tech industry but that doesn't mean you can't bring your unique value to the table.
This is genuinely good advice. Follow up - how does one find their strength when someone better always shows up and the competition makes you think otherwise?
I hope you are getting paid well going through this. Other than that you know the answer. Health(mental and physical) is wealth.
Come to a more chill company like Cisco and you'll be able to do exactly what you're looking for. Make money, then go home chill do whatever
What do you work on there?
How do you survive the layoffs though? Layoffs are probably worse than PIP culture.
Perhaps you can find a co-worker or two who can be an ally, someone who supports you. Also (and it's not clear from your post), try not to equate "criticism of my ideas" with "criticism of me". That's a mental trap that will make it difficult for you to collaborate and grow. It may be an issue with your coworkers' behavior, your perception, or some of both. I hope you sort through this and find peace, either at Bloomberg or elsewhere.
Well these people just have their degrees and nothing else probably. Insecurity, misery and ego tripping. Its like people who flaunt their Mensa membership. But in general I found them very one sided and rather dull in life outside work(I know a lot of engineers from Waterloo)
had this experience before at previous company. Its all culture and comes from top management. At some point i was thinking i am loosing my mind- competitive, favoritism, nepotism, cliques… was thinking it exists only in school. I began to have panic attacks even on weekends and could not sleep. If it affects your mental health time to find another place. The money and company dont worth your health.
Don’t get bothered with university names or scores of some entrance test. They are working with you at the end , that means they r no better than u. Chill and start replying and b assertive. If Bloomberg people r troubling you then my friend I am worried for you. Or just jump the ship and try your luck some other place.
definitely a culture thing. try a tech company maybe. i’m very competitive too but i think of it as more sports competitiveness, you do better without sabotaging others, most times even helping others
I agree it’s likely cultural. I have never experienced this at Apple..
the poking holes in plans is fine. that's your job. having attitudes and being belligerent is probably not good. definitely bad if frequent. derailing to get you in trouble is outright toxic. having arguments frequently is toxic. leave.
What was the exam, IIT JEE ?
AIEEE
If you struggle with AIEEE, you will cry with IITans, they are so smart and hard working, they can rip you off.
