A lot of folks are just making these leaps in logic and blaming their personal dislikes about the tech industry for why these layoffs are happening. It’s sort of cringe. Like stop coping so hard. A few examples I’ve heard have been: 1. Leetcode style interviews led to companies hiring bad engineers which led to these layoffs. Therefore, we should abolish leetcode style interviews. Translation: I suck at leetcode 2. Tech influencers making tech jobs seem so easy is what led to corporate decide to axe SWE position C-suite eats those tiktoks up. It’s literally free advertising for them to attract tech talent lmao 3. Coasting is what led to a drop in productivity which signaled to higher-ups to start these layoffs. The only semi-valid quip I’ve heard. 2 is a brain dead take imo. 1 is pretty stupid too. 3 is probably somewhat valid but it’s obvious these layoffs are the result of macroeconomic conditions New TC: 190K (Amazon) 1 yoe

All three are BS really. You are surprisingly wise for 1YOE though, so good on ya. Yeah, it's mostly part of an ongoing macroeconomic cycle, but tech layoffs are a dramatic overreaction so there's more to it than that. IMO this is largely about myopic, ham-handed tech CEOs trying to assert their dominance over a workforce they really want to believe has permanently lost its bargaining power. It hasn't.
So how do the wagies regain their bargaining power if all CEO’s meet at the same dinner table and we don’t?
At some point every executive not named Elon remembers that without workers, they don't have a product. Usually about the time some new company (hopefully founded by people they screwed) starts handing them their ass.
I have trouble believing c suite loves #2. They want people to join their company and not work?
They don’t want lazy workers. But they do want to signal that they’re a chill, laid back environment to work for, even if it’s not entirely true. Just think about all the bullshit recruiters have told you in the past to attract you. No one is completely honest about how shitty their work place is if their goal is to hire you
Ah, you fell for “macroeconomics” excuses lol
