Perception of Boeing engineers compared to the likes of FB, Msft, Amazon, Google etc. in the puget sound area?
Does Boeing have software engineers in the Puget Sound area? I remember looking once and all openings were for other locations which I found interesting.
Yes. I am one.
I took a quick look at the SPEEA salary charts and there are about 750 of us in the bargaining unit.
Very specific question lol
Sounds like Clarence needs less mdma. Or an e.
I feel qualified to answer this question. Boeing software engineers are used to rigorous software design via heavy CMMI processes. They are very good at the skill of formal software design and architecture. They test their code. They write very good documentation. FANG software engineers consider a few bubbles and arrows as software design. They don’t document shit. They don’t even know what UML is, because they never have to actually go through formalized design reviews. They just hack code together and the juniors get their brains kicked in during code review for lousy design choices and they learn that way. Because of this slower pace, design heavy culture, Boeing software engineers are considered slower and less productive. I don’t honestly believe they are, but in the FANGs, you need to move fast and be a type A talker to get noticed. Being engineers formalize and internalize things more. There is an industry view of a Boeing engineer as having the aerospace/defense stench on them. Meaning if they have too much experience, FANG recruiters are less interested in them. I don’t interview too many aerospace SWEs, but they are very bright. They tend to not excel normally in the interview loops because believe it or not, their interview process at Boeing and other aerospace employers is a standard 4 question verbal interview. You’re evaluated on your resume and industry experience and how well you can explain your strengths and experiences. Little to no coding quizzes are ever done. So they’re are usually unprepared for the standard FANG loop.
Cool thing (or terrifying) about airplane software is it has to work or people die.
My favorite part about this comment is that is was written by a Microsoft employee.
They are as good at software design as FB/Google/MSFT are at aircraft design. 🍆
