Performance of Android vs iPhone after long term use

Is it really true that performance of android phones diminished after several years (4-5 years) of usage whereas iOS runs smoothly even after such time? Wanted to know what is the root cause behind it? Is it because many android phone manufacturers put their own UI on top stock android? Or it has to do something how the code is written and compiled? I could have googled this question, but just wanted to get more insights from android and iOS developers on this platform. Please enlighten.
