Hi folks - considering a role at Square/Block, but concerned about what I’m hearing about a new performance review system, stack ranking, and PIPs over the past few months. Would really appreciate any thoughts here: - Has leadership explained the rationale for these changes? Why implement them now? - Quarterly performance reviews: does this feel excessive? - Any sense that Block has overhired? - Overall, is culture/morale improving over time, or taking a hit like many other tech companies? Tough environment for everyone, so just want to head into it with my eyes open. Thank you! #fintech #square #block
These systems already existed for years - we are just establishing the processes a bit more. The perf reviews outside of promo are very chill and informal. Its to make sure there arent any surprises. I.e if you’re underperforming you will know and be given time to improve and not just a surprise its one year later and you’ve been underperforming. I don’t think we have over hired, we have a lot of different initiatives. No signs of layoffs. Culture isn’t as good as when we were in office pre pandemic but still is quite good especially for a remote company. Morale wise there are a lot of 2021/early 2022 joiners who joined when the stock was at ATH who are still underwater. But the last promo cycle brought a lot of people back. But other than that I think morale is pretty solid. Having been at multiple FAANGs before, I love it here. There are many many long term employees and for a reason. WLB is truly great, good talent and everyone is super empathetic and understanding. Comp is very competitive for new hires. Happy to answer any other questions!
Do you know if it’s possible to negotiate above the listed pay range? I have an offer call tomorrow, and I communicated at the beginning that my current base is higher than my LCOL zone’s range and they communicated it’d be difficult to make an exception. I thought equity and a sign-on could get me to pull the trigger should I get to an offer, and now here I am! But I’d still like a match to my base (about 10k off)
Seems pretty unlikely to me - I would recommend negotiating stock/sign on further instead. Also its better to get stock/sign on since if you come it at the top of the band for base, you won’t get much yearly increases on your base salary.
Stack ranking isn’t new esp every quarter. Some folks are just high on koolaid.
A little bit overhired, honestly

Would be difficult to believe a company of that size doesn't enforce a purge of 3-6%.
