I got an alert today from my credit monitoring service that my personal identity including my SSN is found in the dark web. I have recently joined Uber and went through all sing-up process for new benefits and services that my new employer offers through third party vendors. I suspect my personal identity is leaked in this process since this was the last time I gave up my SSN. I did not apply for a new benefit, loan or credit card in last two years. Therefore, the chances that my existing or previous creditors leaked my SSN is pretty low given the co-incident of these two events. Does it make sense to you ? What do you recommend me to do ? TC ~450K, 8 yoe
It could also be coincidence. Any org that has ever had your ssn can be a potential vector for a leak. Let your company know though. There may be many other employees affected and if it’s indirectly Uber’s fault then they should be able to provide services that help protect your identity.
