Is it normal that my first call is scheduled to be with the director of engineering? I submitted my application 3 days ago and got the email to schedule the call today. This is at Yahoo! I’ve never had an interview process where there wasn’t an initial conversation with a recruiter, so wondering if this is the norm/what to expect #interview #softwareengineer #yahoo
Which role?
Senior Software Engineer
First of all, titles are inflated around here so I would guess that the “director” is your hiring manager. The hiring process isn’t standardized at all — each hiring manager can decide how to structure the interview process (within reason). I suggest you ask the recruiter what to expect from this initial interview, especially whether it will be technical or behavioral. That’s a perfectly appropriate thing to ask.
I had the call and it was in fact with an engineering director, not a hiring manager. There was no recruiter involved, I was only contacted by this director.
I guess my post wasn’t clear. I didn’t mean that you wouldn’t be talking to the engineering director. My point was that the engineering director might BE the hiring manager. Plenty of first-level managers have director titles around here. How did it go?
Definitely not normal. Our recruiters can be pretty incompetent, so you’re better off just talking to the director.
I’m not sure how much I should prepare for a first call like this. It’s only 30 min so I can’t imagine it would be too technical right off the bat?
I have no idea. But the fact that the director has not informed you what the interview will cover is an example of how yahoo is a shitshow.
