I’m currently the tech lead for a trading desk. I have a PhD in computer science from an Ivy and about 10 years of experience. I’ve worked in finance for my whole career, always in front-office roles, though my work was more infrastructure-based until the past few years, where I’ve gone in more of a quant direction but am still much more engineer than quant. I enjoy trying to stay up-to-date on the state of the tech world, and the idea of making bets on startups sounds appealing to me. Is is possible for someone with my background to pivot to working on the investment side of a VC firm? Do you actually get to spend most of your time thinking about the tech world in those roles? Does it even make sense to consider this type of career change? TC: ~700k
Is 700k TC common for a tech lead at Citadel? Did you make more during 2020-2021?
Not sure how common it is. I get the sense that I’m a high performer overall, but I don’t know if management considers me top 5% or anything like that. Being in the front office probably helps. And no, I made less in 2020-2021.
I thought tech leads made more considering that 2022 grads were offered 500k+ offers with sign on.
I’ve heard that generally people will be paid more to get them in the door. Since I joined before the tech market exploded, I didn’t get that benefit.

Who is excited about Apple new iPads?
You’d likely have to start from the bottom as a VC. And it’s rare to see a VC who really knows tech. They are more of an operator, with ROI being the top goal.
