I’ve accepted a job at a startup with HQ in Los Angeles. I live in Atlanta and have a significantly cheaper lifestyle here (read: almost $0 rent). I’m allowed to work from home indefinitely (no office in ATL), but I’m wondering if the jump to the headquarters would be worth the increased LA expense from a career progression standpoint. Long term goal is to make a home in LA. But there’s an immediate financial gap. Short term, to live the same quality of life in LA as in Atlanta, I’d need to make $30k more pre-tax otherwise my savings rate would drop and then I’m further away from financial security. How would you think about this problem? TC $125 + variable bonus #Careeradvice #startup #careerbuilder #relocation #officelife #wfh
LA is definitely expensive. If you're in tech you should be able to increase your tc to 300k+ in a few years. Housing is tough in California but imo is worth it -- I've lived all country and California is definitely my favorite place ive lived. But i hit the jackpot to afford it.
You think 300k even without a SWE job/skill is doable in a few years? What are you envisioning for that jump?
As you gain more experience you can move to mangas or unicorns with strong equity packages.

Atlanta is LCOL?? I thought it is MCOL. What would be the rent for 1 bedroom apartment in a good neighborhood??
In atlanta, could be $2000 if you want to be urban and in the middle of it. If you don’t mind strip malls and a drive, it’ll be $1200 ish. Less if 20 mins further out. Splitting a 2 bedroom with no ac and street parking can be $1800 in Weho or silver lake in LA.
