The recruiter said my interview performance was phenomenal and “the feedback was some of the best [they had] ever seen”, but came out of the gate with a low ball offer well below my current salary and 30% below what I was expecting. In the seemingly friendly initial negotiation I barely pushed for 5% more than my current base salary, hoping to make up the rest in equity. The next day they rescind the offer with no explanation. Still feeling a little shaken up about it. I would have seriously considered a pay cut because of how excited I was about the role + company, but they decided my reasonable expectations weren’t even worth a respectful discussion. YOE: 10 / TC: $235k #Offer #Negotiation #NameAndShame
Maybe they just got a new valuation and they didn’t want to pay you 600k a year
We hadn’t even discussed how much equity they wanted to offer.
Always the risk, like on Ebay. You counter and the other party can decline. Unless you have niche skills this is always a possibility.
I didn’t even counter. This was all between them saying “we want to hire you” and them giving an actual offer. We were just discussing initial numbers for base salary alone.
They could have come back like a normal company and said, “we checked into it and $X is really all we can do on base, but here’s what else our offer includes.”
I mean, their loss. Kind of ridiculous to rescind an offer like that.
Guess you dodged a bullet
Did you ask why?
I did. They wouldn’t say a thing.
They ghosted or just say something generic like we are pursuing other candidates?
You dodged a big bullet. If they “loved” you so much, they would have paid you what you’re asking.
Lol true, typical recruiter speak
Yeah, it's just a negotiation tactics. I suppose it can work if you have an equal or slightly better competing offer but this one "really loved" you so you are persuaded to go with it. I am surprised there are still people who don't recognize when a recruiter is lying.
It was out of their budget, happened to me as well
With Plaid? Or another company?
Another - Samsung
Oof. I’m in the interview process for Plaid. Can you share what position this was for? Or can you share if it was engineering or non-tech?
I’ll DM you.
Can you dm me too? Just went through the team onsites and mentioned to recruiter I’m hoping to match my dropbox comp (they don’t do bonuses or a lot of the other $ benefits) and it’s been 4 days with no response
also in the interview process with them right now... am still quite excited but this is super strange that they would do that. OP if you get any insights as to why this happened, would love to hear
I doubt I will :/ The recruiter wouldn’t give me any indication as to their reason and they haven’t responded to a “thanks anyway” follow up email I sent.

Were you negotiating with a three year old? If they can't afford you then they should at least make their final offer clear instead of rescinding.
Right?? Instead of just giving me their best, they all but ghosted me. My friend suggested they may have had a cheaper candidate right behind me. Who knows...
