Received an offer from Sony PS in Security Domain at the same level as current role. Location: SF Bay Area Base: 150K Bonus (paid in mid year 2024): 15% Sign on: 15K Current TC in LCOL: Base: 114K Bonus: 7% YOE: 2.5 Also, is this a good time to make a switch? With layoffs and inflation, should I look for a better offer? #cybersecurity #security
For 2.5 years, $150k sounds okay for a job outside of the big tech companies. Just consider what you expect out of this. Financially, you'll probably be about the same or possibly a little worse off. Your quality of life will be quite different. Expect to rent an apartment for the foreseeable future. Forget buying a house. But on the plus side, this could be a stepping stone to a higher paying big tech job, if that's a goal. Living in the Bay Area opens up a lot of opportunities but IMO, it's not worth it unless you are very career driven and it's goal to work in big tech.
OP sounds young so if they’re willing to pinch pennies they could live like they’re an Amazon warehouse worker and stash away cash and come our way ahead in 3-5 years Rent a room in a house in Oakland and sock away $6k cash per month and then OP can go outright buy a house in cash in wherever they’re from in a few years
How cheaply do you think you could live in Oakland without feeling like you were back in college? 😄 I'm curious. OP could scrape by but that's part of the quality of life trade off they should consider. If you can live a relatively nice, comfortable life in Kentucky for $115k, is it worth it to move across the country, live as cheaply as possible, rent a room far from work and ride the BART in?
Might be team dependent but I was interviewing for a PM role there and I was warned from the Hiring Manager that you are expected to work Japan timezone hours as well so be warned you might have alot of late night calls
This is very team dependent and mostly not accurate
May I know which domain within security is this for? If it is appsec, you might need to be paid a little more
Just want to say that’s a pretty cool company to get an offer from. Congrats.
you will be poor moving here on that base. but yes this is a good time
That's a pretty low comp for a technical role in the bay. Also, the relo amount is extremely low. I had 20k as a relo budget. I say push back for more base pay. 150k is not alot in the bay.
I love these threads because the numbers are very realistic. Congrats on your new offer! If rent is less than 2500/month where you would live, then I say do it.

Do you have to relocate? If so are they paying for it?
Yes, have to relocate. They are paying 5K gross for relocation
That’s not a lot. If you don’t mind me asking where are you relocating from? If you are coming from a low cost of living then SF is going to be so much more expensive. You will not be able to have the same quality of life even with that bump.
