Hello, I am planning on moving to MSFT, my current company had filed for my lottery and got picked this time. The ideal way would have been if MSFT waited till after october and me applying for transfer, But they cannot wait and wanted me to join immediately(As the position could not be opened any longer), I decided to give up my H1b this time(as a chance of layoffs can happen att my current place). I have a couple of questions. I am planning on changing to MSFT. My OPT Expires on July 12. And OPT Extension is valid for two years after that. I currently filed for OPT Extension and sent over the documents to USCIS(Current employer info). Should i send them documents after i switch to the other company or send them before i join them[I need to send them the new i20 with MSFT as the employer and send them the new i983]. Which is advisable and safe? Also, whats the time line within which the documents need to reach USCIS after i switch to the new. company? Lets say i start at MSFT on june 1, when should all the documents reach them? Because applying for new i20 would take some time as well. Whats the safe thing to do? Another question being, assuming my current company hasnt filed my petition in the mean time, before i send my new docs to USCIS, i should make sure that the current company does not file a petition and even if they do i should ask them to retract it? Or would it be a problem? Because uscis will have a petition from x and opt extension from y. Please let me know what the right thing for me to do would be and what are the steps to ensure a smooth transition. Any help is appreciated. TIA #workvisa
Don’t make the mistake of giving up H1B. MSFT you can reapply and start working for another team
I get it man, but what would happen if my current company lays me off(lesser chances but still)
I have a similar situation but a bit easy situation. My h1 is not picked and my opt extension is pending with vmware. I am planning to move to Microsoft as well. Should I wait for my opt card or join before i receive it
Wait for approval. Once approved you jump around before getting the physical copy
Do i have to do some paperwork? I heard if you're opt is approved you can move easily. You just have let univ dso know within 10 days
@OP. If you are sure about your start date in new company and end date in current company. You can request before end of your current employment .One of my friend did same my university accepted it.I guess your university ideally should accept. Did you try checking with School DSO about this? Also, make sure you get i983 from new employer before joining. It makes transition smooth
Ok so once i get the start date from the new company, i can apply for new i20 before joining it. And, i should make sure i withdraw my h1b petition.
I’m on same boat. How can I withdraw the H1b petition if it gets picked in lottery this week? Just tell your current employer not to apply for petition?

So i should make sure that my current company either does not file my h1b petition or withdraw if they already did, right? I mean i have two more chances next two years. If i stay and get laid off, that would be another problem, which is why i wanted to change right now. In my state, H1b is just picked, NOT approved yet. am i missing anything?
That's the thing bro even if my current position is safe for a couple of months msft is not willing to wait and is even kinda worried if wr don't expedite the position may be affected
