How do they get away with it? I was recently considering a Machine Learning Engineer position at Activision Blizzard Media in the Bay Area. Cleared initial tech screen and decided against the virtual on-site. The recruiter told me the compensation package would look like a base+annual bonus of 240k and a sign on bonus around 50k if they decided to make an offer. No RSUs. Given the demand and supply for machine learning engineers, I don’t see any qualified candidate taking this offer. Not deciding to give your employees RSUs especially in the Bay Area is treating them poorly. #offer #gaming
I don't know how they do it. I was a hiring manager for Bioware in 2018 and it was impossible to get experienced engineers because the salaries were so low compared to any other tech company in town. I begged our director to increase the comp package to be more competitive but he refused. I moved to another company (still in games) the next year and my TC increased by $100k -- Same city and all (literally down the street)
I worked at a game company and with the regular hours I was working, I realized it was basically minimum wage rate
Google, Uber, Netflix, Amazon, Adobe, Splunk are not social media companies and yet they pay quite well. The fact that gaming companies refuse to give RSU to employees shows how poorly they value their engineers. Gaming companies don’t pay low salary, they pay poor salary like Samsung. I worked there previously.
This is false. Increasingly game company revenues are coming from recurring revenue/micro transactions.

I rejected the interview after they mentioned the comp. Not worth my time. I just wonder how do they get qualified people with this comp.

At the low end of experience, people line up to get into the industry, so you don't need to offer a high compensation. Then, at the experienced end, you typically have so many people who have been in the industry so long, they've normalized low compensation.
If you are a SWE or MLE then you don’t need to stick to a particular industry. If you are a senior person and they pay you less, you leave for a better offer.
But for some people they want to be in the games industry, so they’ll accept a lower offer cause it is games.
Is 240K really considered low ? For Bay Area it’s on low side. For Irvine 240K is good.

You guys need to learn about how margins vary from industry to industry. You can’t expect every company to pay tech industry salaries.
The issue here is refusing to give RSU to engineers. Cash part of the offer is pretty good.
Gaming is pretty freaking high margin. Probably higher than most tech companies.
Never thought I’d see “poor treatment” used to describe paying an IC 240k to work probably 40 hours a week on something they’re [presumably] passionate about. Reevaluate your priorities OP, you sound miserable.
People like you have slave mentality. You are the reason why executives can exploit ICs. TC is determined by demand and supply and the value added. 240k is very low if you see what the market pays.
OP u are absolutely right. I left the game industry for the same reason. I feel my job is brainless compared to the complexity of working on render engines and physics, and I make 8x more now. Don’t work for game companies, they are in a different reality. They do that because there is an endless line of people that think woking in games is the same as playing games.
