Portfolio company layoffs during a recession?

Hi all, I’m lookin for any wisdom on whether recessions generally result in increased risk of layoffs at PE-owned companies, above and beyond public companies. Should a worker deciding between comparable public vs private company job offers in a recession be more wary that PE ownership means less recession-proofing?
