Hey everyone, relatively new here so I'll just put everything up front: I work for USCC, do some really cool shit, getting out really soon from an injury I got a few years ago. I'm currently in the process of interviewing at a few FANGs, plus a couple other big tech companies, to where I'm now at onsite interviews. I have a couple friends who have been out for a few years and are working at some of these companies, and their experiences have been mixed going straight into the big companies. So to my fellow vets on here, what are some of the biggest challenges you faced going from .mil to private sector with larger companies? What have you enjoyed, what has been difficult? If you had to do it over again, what changes would you make? Thanks for the advice! Edit: for simplicity sake I'll just leave this question to vets, of course any advice from other sources are appreciated
no one cares if you’re a vet in tech. if that’s a problem for you, recommend staying out of tech.
i dont give a fuck if any one else gives a fuck im a vet. i just want to know what some of the more common, bigger issues vets may face are, particularly in big tech
Looool what’s wrong snowflake? The user above just answered your question. No one cares. It won’t be any different for you.
The reality is tech employers don't really care about military service. Network with other vets at FANG companies through LinkedIn and get referrals/advice that way. or DM me
Mil service is a bit undervalued unless you come in as a 'military hire'. I've found a lot of folks in tech like my post military experience more, since they think I was just kicking in doors and killing people in the military. You'll have to make a point to strongly tie the work types together
Facebook hires a ton of Navy Vets.
Op/other vets, how do you feel about the rigid hirearchy of the military vs the relatively very flat silicon valley . Most people in Silicon Valley don't necessarily see it as taking orders from their managers.
It's not an issue at all. Apples to oranges
It's a cultural difference

I have worked with some vets. I didn't know they were vets before, but I am really impressed by their work ethic. Something the rest can learn as well.
working with vets in the tech industry:- silicon valley is very non hirearchical, especially the top few, while they come from a very rigid background of following orders. Just wondering if you felt this difference was palpable?
Have you worked with vets before @Microsoft? Just curious whether your statements are from experience or assumptions.
