Potential EEO Violation

I see job postings in companies such as Lime, where they mention they need English and Chinese speakers for Product Mgt roles. Check out this job: Product Manager, Hardware https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/1491608341

how is this any different from job postings that say “bilingual english/spanish preferred”?

Orion benevolent OP Nov 7, 2019

Because the role is of Product Manager. A PM deals with designing product, go to market strategies, research. When it comes to building part of it, PMs rely on Manufacturing Project Managers, PMs don’t have to speak Mandarin and interact with factory workers.

No different, this role also says preferred, not required. OP didn’t read the job description very closely and thinks they know the role better than the hiring manager. “You will partner closely with diverse internal and external teams in both the U.S. and China including engineering (software and firmware), manufacturing, supply chain, operations, design and executive teams.”

Yep, but they can reject you for not being a Chinese speaker - that’s discrimination

Qualcomm Wxdbdg13 Nov 7, 2019

I would think it's a discrimination if it's a generic role .. this role probably needs people to work with folks from China and it's a skill needed..

Amazon Gjdyveycc4 Nov 7, 2019

They are asking for skills. You can learn Mandarin and that’s a skill. Also, it says preferred not required.

SAP hxamp Nov 7, 2019

but tell me how many non chinese fluently speak mandarin? we know why this requirement is inserted.

Intel tax man Nov 7, 2019

yes it’s inserted because you’re going to be working closely with teams in china and presumably in chinese?

Cisco webecisco Nov 7, 2019

This isn’t EEO if they need certain languages it’s because they need to be able to serve those languages.

SAP hxamp Nov 7, 2019

it is legal, but it is designed to hire only chinese candidates

Orion benevolent OP Nov 7, 2019

Precisely

Intel tax man Nov 7, 2019

ok, let’s say i need someone to liaison with factories in bangladesh for my cool new product. since the factories are in bangladesh, i would prefer someone fluent in bengali. how would you make this job posting?

AbbVie xtkb06 Nov 7, 2019

Do you have your heart set on being a product manager at Lime?

Orion benevolent OP Nov 7, 2019

I would have liked to. I like Micro-mobility space. I have experience building IOT products cradle to grave in startups. But the way my applications to Lime end up expiring with not even a reply, brings me to suspicion that they actually are biased to hire Mandarin native speakers or Chinese nationals

Lime lilie Nov 8, 2019

Forget about this position. You are not going to be happy and no one can create a solid product in this company. You will have to deal with a Chinese cofounder who cannot speak English, while making all the decisions.

Orion benevolent OP Nov 8, 2019

Appreciate the response. I had also applied for Engg leadership. Lime has a rotten hiring process, they don’t even read resumes I am sure, they already know who to hire perhaps from their own circle. Why are you there? Thanks for replying tho, most folks here did not get the point. It’s not about language preference, this is shady bias

Lime lilie Nov 8, 2019

They hire only slaves😏

EEO means freedom from discrimination on the basis of protected classes such as race, color, sex, national origin, religion, age, disability or genetic information. Listing a bunch of skills in a job posting is normal. How is it illegal if I had a niche job and the role requires that skillet? For example, I need a Java engineer, is it illegal to add that criteria? Don’t listen to disgruntled employees who only troll Blind. Lime has an office in China with hardware employees so asking for “preferred Mandarin skills” is not illegal. The role will work with FTE in China and U.S. and most of the employees in the China office don’t speak English. Not having Mandarin skills is NOT a dealbreaker. As everyone else said on this post, language is a skill and anyone with this skill can apply. Making general sweeping assumptions about a company’s hiring practice without fact checking or understanding the needs of the business and why they are asking for specific skills is biased IMO.
