Prestige: Amazon vs Google vs Microsoft Research
Which company has highest prestige?
MSR > G. Amazon shouldn't be in the same sentence.
Curious to know - does Amazon even have a research group like MSR or Google research?
MSR and it aint even close. MSR has better prestige than even Google Brain and I know plenty of PhD folks who chose MSR over Brain. MSR is basically the modern but lesser successor to Bell labs. MSR is basically academia with close to zero obligation to do applied research or help a product where as at Google you need to have impact on the product. From a companys persepective Brain is cleary more sustainable but from an intellectual persepective MSR crushes Google Brain FB AI and everyone
Your idea about MSR is at least 5 years old. Most of the best folks have already left.
Well I did intern at MSR 4 yrs back and work at Google and have a friend in Brain. Though there is more impetus after firing MSR Silicon Valley to do applied research MSR is still the only place that does blue sky research that is research for the sake of research.
I'd rather be at a top hedge than G.

What enlightenment do you want ? Machine learning research : msr is where it’s at . G is fine for product development and all , but if you are an AI / ML PhD then msr is like a dream job

What's blinds obsession with Google? Do you even have any freaking idea about Microsoft research? Sure, Google brain and Deepmind are different, but regular Google comes no where near to MSR in terms of prestige.
I would love to work at Microsoft Research. It would be a dream to work with Lamport
Those things shouldn't even be compared cause MSR is very different from average G/A/MS engineer responsibilities and expectations.
