anybody on this own their own business? probably not, but worth a shot. currently attending school, final year (younger than you think). Founded my business last year. — Just want to know what were some struggles you might’ve came across or are looking into getting into something (as an owner) but is holding you back? — Drop some Gems, thx
I own and run an engineering consulting business. Mechanical engineering to be precise. However, of late most clients want electronics integrated + data collection and manipulation. I've been wanting to learn more on these topics but setting time aside NOW to learn something for the FUTURE always means foregoing current revenue, unless I wait for the market down turn, in which case limiting contracts won't feel like I'm losing revenue... This is one of my top struggles currently.
Do you mean like IoT? If so, you can probably do this now with commercial enterprise grade off the shelf products
Yep, we've started using IoT modules for many products. However, beyond that, clients often want some additional algorithms developed for which I now need to learn (and hire) experts in data science as well. It's hard to hire and get quality work in a field that you yourself have little expertise in. Hence my kind of strategic struggle ---- how to find the right balance of both: fulfilling current clients / maximizing revenue vs limiting revenue and investing time in learning new technology.
