I have an opportunity to move to NYC and do platform product management at Capital One. My question is - will it accelerate my career being in NYC/doing backend product work at C1? RN I am a PM consultant at a small design studio. TC: 106 New TC: 135(ish)
Versus?
Staying at my current PM consulting role
I mean based on the info provided it seems like a no brainer. NYC is a top 5 metro. You get into a full time, dedicated role. Not a lot of people will take the consulting experience seriously. Platform and capital one isn’t as ideal. You want to be in a position to get business results and banks are slow.
Well what do you want to do with your career? If you have an interest in banking, financial technology, APIs, legacy systems (you may laugh but they’re important and present), maybe agile development, this is probably a good role to build skills that will be transferable to other PM roles. If this is not your interest you may want to reconsider.
It depends on whether you plan on putting in the work to maximize the opportunity. I moved to NYC for my first product role, got involved in meetups, conferences and networked my ass off and I can say it truly changed the trajectory of my career. There are a ton of opportunities to learn and grow but you have to want to do the work.
Do you have any recommended communities for PMs in NYC?
