I am a product manager at McKinsey (internal role) and also an MBA candidate at a top 10 school. I can’t go through standard recruiting but would like to target an Associate role once I graduate. What are my options/chances to groom myself and solidify my application? Given my unconventional situation, how early do I want to start applying? Would I follow the standard interview process or is it different since I would be an “internal hire”? #consulting #mba
+1 on the ask the internal person.
What's the difference between PM and Associate at McKinsey? Aren't all of them the same fluffy problem solving. I ask because I would like to work at McK at some point in my career.
Similar but PM is internal whereas Associate works with third parties (clients)
OP would you mind sharing why you want to switch from your internal PM role to an associate level consulting role? What is the internal role like? Sounds like moving from PM level to associate level would be a demotion, but maybe there’s different standards / levels for internal vs consulting roles that I’m unaware of (and corresponding gaps in pay?) I was considering interviewing for associate level consultant but am becoming more interested in internal roles due to better WLB (not sure if that perception is accurate though!) Would really appreciate any insights you can share, TIA
Internal roles are nowhere near as prestigious or well paid as consulting roles
Associate is POST-MBA level for McKinsey new hires. Product Managers at McK means he/she likely manages one of the consultancy's internal products. Jumping to the integrative consulting side means a big raise in base and total comp, access to better benefits etc. And partnership track.
Thanks BCG1, I’m not very familiar with the internal side. Any idea what the salaries are / how big a gap from consulting salaries? And differences in WLB?
What are internal projects? HR tools, admin stuff etc? McK just provide help to other companies right?
Why not trying to switch to PM at fang? Less stress, more money. Slower trajectory but higher earning ceiling.
Ask a McKinsey recruiter internally. Per my understanding you get an interview 100% but after that its ur performance in interviews no preference
