Airbnb eliminated (morphed its PM role into Product Marketing). But, I do see this being a danger for the role as a whole. - The onus will come on to Engineers + Designers - PMs will become obsolete if their only function is owning roadmap - Google originally started the modern PM function as an industry and those were Engineers first who owned Products end-to-end. I would recommend sticking to a more IC (Dev / DevOps) role in the future. This consolidation is not a good sign. #productmanager #google #airbnb
So it’s just a title change? What is the change in responsibilities?
No title or responsibility change in my org. No one has any idea what Brian is talking about.
Big change in responsibility. We have to do PM plus go to market and setting a vision. Lots more (and more challenging) work
IMO, Not all projects require PMs.
Not all projects have them
You’re confusing the task with the title
Apple style? Product marketing? What
u supposed to answer that for us brah
Apple has EPMs, which is project management within hardware and some software teams. Also have PMMs, if you look up the job description it seems like they’re responsible for everything from market research, to requirements, to go-to-market strategies. More of an MBA type of position
Is PM referring to Product Manager or Project Manager?, Also what's the difference between IC & Dev
IC can be also a QA, an Ops person, etc
PM implies a product manager in a product company. It's not project manager (only services companies have them?) nor is it program manager (TPM)
Product manager, not project manager….
Microsoft had them as well in the mid 90s. Started on the Office team. Excel I believe.
Apple’s product marketing = traditional product marketing + product management!! So product management isn’t dying it’s simply taking a different form, in one firm.
Big NO. I worked at apple for a while - PMMs don’t interact with engineering on a daily basis. Designers do. PMMs stay at a high level and focus on outbound marketing
Is it possible that was a while ago?
I’m not terribly concerned. Product managers have to do product marketing work all the time. It just boils down to how much of that work you end doing. This seems like a superficial change.
Even if you’re not concerned with Airbnb’s change, you should be alarmed by the overwhelming response to that where everyone is relieved that someone has said what everyone was already thinking.
Designers are mercurial and constantly in fear (rightfully so) of being eliminated. It’s an undervalued job in most companies. Product managers tend to fill in the gaps there. I’m not surprised the designers applauded.
apple don’t got PM either?
It is actually the reverse. The product manager roles is being added to many orgs/teams. The EPM team has been changed into product management a few years ago in Siri org.
epm is executive pm?
As an engineer/developer, I'd have cheered. Project Managers are a time suck
PM is product manager….
A lot of PM, although with the title of “product manager”, just do project management works
N = 1
That’s how every trend starts
They didn’t get rid of PMs, just retitled the job. The way people here salivate over people losing their jobs makes me Ill
