Blind family. Currently, L6 PM at Amazon with 250k TC in Seattle, WA with 6 YOE in Product. Need your help deciding between two offers - Staff PM Tesla (TC 277.5K) vs Staff PM Walmart (TC 308K; RSU vesting is weird as full TC will be hit only in 4th year till then will only get % of annual RSUs). Do you think there is room here to negotiate? Purely from WLB standpoint Walmart seems like a good choice here. #pm #product #productmanager #offer #negotiation #negotiateoffer #walmart #tesla
Seattle cost of living is better for that Amazon salary vs Bay Area Walmart. Need about 100k more to break even same cost of living and worth the change. Not a good financial move. Also As earn more you lose lot of tax advantages. You will be more tax in higher bracket.
How is the difference 100K?
Narrator: it’s not
Walmart which has definitely a better PM culture/career than Tesla.
OP - which team this is for? Why no new hire stock?
OP your take home $ does not increase too much since you’re moving from WA to CA. I’d stay put unless you’re being managed out.
+1
Tesla doesn’t have bonuses? Is that right?
Some roles offer bonuses. I just do not know which roles those are but they exist.
Is keep looking an option?
Look at the stock price appreciation of Walmart vs Tesla buddy. I would choose Tesla anytime
Buddy, Yes buddy
That's a pretty big comp hit for the next 18 months at Walmart... have you asked for a sign-on bonus or an initial equity grant? 2024 comp will be 190k + 13k equity + 19k bonus = 222k, assuming you start on 7/1. For 2023, assuming your current base is at 170, you're gaining 10k in cash, but throwing away 40k in RSUs from November. So, unless my math is wrong (and it probably is) you're down $58k before you see a 10% raise in April 2025 and that's before you consider california income tax (~17k) or col. I would probably ask for $80k sign-on RSU and ~$50k sign-on bonus to cover this.
$TSLA has lot of upside. Choose Tesla if you are in for the money. Otherwise Walmart. I would choose Tesla anyday anytime even if they beat me to death. Why? Because the $TSLA stock price can 3x or 4x or more. The future is Tesla.
Do you hear yourself? Tesla 3X is 3T in market cap. I am not saying one is better than others since I haven’t worked in Tesla but geez don’t make a call on this calculation
Lol. No wonder you’re stuck at ibm
Congratulations on the offers, OP. Walmart has its issues, but I’d rather go with them over Tesla due to the poor work culture and WLB at said company. Going to Tesla is a poor decision considering the fact that you’ll likely burn out and won’t be treated as decently as you would if you went to Walmart—you’ll want to evaluate how PMs are treated at each company before you make the move, considering that PMs may not be the most liked at any organization and you could be walking into another situation like the one you’re leaving. Good luck! TC: 90K
OP let me know the team at Tesla. I may have information that could help you make a more informed decision.
Agree with the comment, although Walmart is not a super place for PMs, but Tesla is rock bottom. There’s no autonomy at all for PMs.
