Crossed a line with my boss
Coming up as a PM, I consumed a lot of content stressing best Product practices (user centricity, evergreen North Star metrics, rigorous quant OKRs, experimentation & rapid iteration etc). My initial training was in an organization that, at least at face value, reinforced the importance of these practices. Now as I advance, I’m seeing more focus on politics than best practices. My management is primarily focused on corporate survival and stealing scope from other teams. We’ve never had a clear team charter. I’m the only person on my team with a pod vision and quantitative OKRs, and this rigor has minimal impact on my advancement. I have little opportunity to influence broader objectives bottoms-up, we’re at the whims of our VP and everyone just spars for resources. Welcome to corporate tech? Or is this on the dysfunctional side of the spectrum? TC: 300k #pm #product #productmanager
Welcome to big corporate 😕
Everywhere it's a bit of both, the percentage of politics over best practice is less in some lucky orgs. Welcome to PMing in real life.
